# IELTS fee in UK

IELTS Academic or General Training costs from GBP 215 to GBP 250 in the UK, depending on location, at the British Council; IDP does not take IELTS bookings in the UK. The full fee table, how to book, the ID rule, cancellation policy and paper status, from each provider's own page.

- British Council, IELTS Academic / General Training (Computer): The exact fee for a centre shows in the booking portal.
- British Council, IELTS for UKVI (Computer): The page advises checking gov.uk before booking a SELT.
- British Council, One Skill Retake (IELTS for UKVI) (Computer): Must be completed within 60 days of the original test day.
- British Council, One Skill Retake (Computer): The UK fee table prices only the IELTS for UKVI One Skill Retake.

IDP has no IELTS site for the UK: ielts.idp.com/uk returns "page not found", and IDP's country list has no United Kingdom. In the UK, IELTS is booked through the British Council.

Testmigo doesn't sell tests: you book and pay with the provider.

## How to book

- British Council: On the IELTS registration page, choose the test and the test mode (IELTS on computer, or on computer with Writing on Paper), then the country, city and a date. Enter your email to create a profile and follow the prompts to book. [Book with British Council](https://ieltsregistration.britishcouncil.org/)

## ID to bring

- British Council: Book with "a photo or scan of your photo ID document (passport or national identity card)" and show "the identity document you used when booking the test" to enter the test room.

## Test dates and centres

- British Council: Cities and dates appear in the booking portal once you choose the test, and the pages mention "late booking options".

## Reschedule, cancel and refund

- British Council: You can cancel any time before test day, with the refund depending on timing (75% for standard IELTS cancelled 15 or more days ahead under the linked policy), and UK candidates have statutory cancellation rights within 14 calendar days of booking. You can transfer once, to a date within three months, with "at least 14 days' notice" and an admin fee of up to 25%; 14 days or less is treated as a cancellation. IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills refund 75% more than 14 days before, 50% within 14 days but more than two days, 25% within two days, and nothing on or after test day.

## Paper or computer

- British Council: "From mid-2026, IELTS on paper is no longer available"; Writing on Paper (a computer test with handwritten Writing) is offered in selected locations.

## When results come

IELTS on computer and IELTS for UKVI results come in 1 to 5 days (most within 2), and a One Skill Retake in 3 to 5 days. Paper tests, where still offered, take up to 13 days.

Only British Council runs IELTS in UK, so there is nothing to compare.

### Can I take IELTS online?

IELTS Online is taken at home, but check that the organisation you need it for accepts it. Australia's Home Affairs doesn't, and UK visas that need a Secure English Language Test need IELTS for UKVI. See the band requirements pages for each country's rules.
