## Why these answers are right

**11. C.** Craig says the bouldering hall never gets stale, because every Monday the setters strip one section and put up fresh problems. A problem is a bouldering route, so new routes appearing each week matches option C.

**12. E.** The auto-belay wall is very popular, so on weekend afternoons staff will ask climbers to come off after three climbs and let the next person go. Three climbs at busy times is a limit on use, option E.

**13. B.** Because lead climbers fall further, nobody climbs on the lead wall until they have passed an assessment with an instructor, even experienced outdoor leaders. Passing an assessment first is the test in option B.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Part 2. You will hear the manager of a new indoor climbing centre giving a talk to people who have just become members.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 15.

**Announcer:** Now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to 15.

**Manager:** Evening, everyone, and welcome to Wattleford Climbing Centre. I'm Craig Dunmore, the manager, and it's great to see so many of you here in our first week.

**Manager:** I'll start with a quick tour of the different climbing areas, so you know what each one's for.

**Manager:** Most of you will begin in the bouldering hall, on your left as you came in. Bouldering just means climbing short walls without a rope or a harness.

**Manager:** Our walls in there are four and a half metres at the highest point, and the whole floor is covered in thick foam mats for you to land on.

**Manager:** The great thing about the hall is that it never gets stale. Every Monday our setters strip one section and put up fresh problems, so there are new climbs to try each week.

**Manager:** And there's no time limit in there, however busy it gets.

**Manager:** Next to it is the auto-belay wall. An auto-belay is a device fixed at the top of the wall that winds in a strap as you climb, then lowers you gently to the floor when you let go.

**Manager:** That means you can climb on your own, without a partner to hold a rope, and you don't need to book either.

**Manager:** The only catch is that it's very popular. So on weekend afternoons, our staff will ask you to come off after three climbs and let the next person have a go.

**Manager:** Then, along the right-hand side of the building, there's the lead wall, which at fifteen metres is the tallest in the centre.

**Manager:** In lead climbing the rope isn't already fixed above you. You clip it into quickdraws on the wall as you go up, so if you fall, you drop further than you would on a top rope.

**Manager:** For that reason, nobody climbs there until they've passed an assessment with one of our instructors. Even if you've led outdoors for years, you'll still need to do it.

**Manager:** A couple of you asked whether the university climbing club would be using the lead wall on Wednesday nights.

**Manager:** Well, they've actually decided to stay at their own wall on campus, so it's open to members all week.

**Manager:** For the kids, we've got the Nest, our children's area, for climbers aged five to twelve, with lower walls and big, chunky holds.

**Manager:** Children can't simply drop in, I'm afraid. It's only open for the sessions you reserve online, and every one is run by an instructor.

**Manager:** Finally, there's the training room. Some of you will have seen fingerboards before. They're boards with small edges on them, and you hang from them to give yourself a much stronger grip.

**Manager:** Oh, and if you'd rather just watch, the café upstairs has a view over the whole centre. It's a good spot to see your friends climb.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the talk, you have some time to look at questions 16 to 20.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 16 to 20.

**Manager:** Right, if you could all look at the floor plan you've been given, I'll show you where everything is. We'll start at the entrance, at the bottom of the plan.

**Manager:** As you walk in, reception is straight ahead of you, and the stairs up to the café are just behind it.

**Manager:** Equipment hire isn't at the desk itself. It's in the room immediately on your right as you come through the doors.

**Manager:** That's where you can rent shoes, harnesses and chalk bags.

**Manager:** The first-aid room is next door to equipment hire, right in the corner of the building. If you hurt yourself, any member of staff will take you there.

**Manager:** Now, for anyone who's booked a lead assessment, you'll meet your instructor beside the lead wall.

**Manager:** Don't wait at the end near the first-aid room, though. Go up to the far end, at the top of the plan, where the lead wall meets the auto-belay wall. That's where the practice ropes are kept.

**Manager:** To get to the training room, walk through the bouldering hall to the back wall, and you'll see two doors there.

**Manager:** The one in the corner is the training room. The other door, the one nearer the auto-belay wall, is the setters' workshop, and that's staff only.

**Manager:** And lastly, the changing rooms. From reception, turn left, towards the bouldering hall, and walk along the front of the building.

**Manager:** The changing rooms are the first door you come to. If you carry on into the corner, you'll find the toilets instead.

**Manager:** Right, that's it from me. Go and grab some shoes, and enjoy your first climb.

**Announcer:** That is the end of Part 2. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers.
