## Why these answers are right

**1. business.** The note asks what Anita is studying. When the adviser checks that she is a registered student, she says she is doing a degree in business studies, so business studies, or simply business, fills the gap within the three-word limit.

**2. third.** This gap needs the year of the course Anita is in now. She has been at university for four years, but she says she is in the 3rd year because she took last year off, so the word to write is third.

**3. Sport Centre.** The table asks where the receptionist job is. The adviser describes a job at the reception desk at the Sports Center for three evenings a week, which clashes with Anita's evening lectures. Sports Centre is two words, and either spelling is accepted.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you will hear a conversation between a student and a job advisor.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Agent:** Good morning.

**Student:** Oh, good morning.

**Student:** Is this... er... room number 26?

**Agent:** Yes, that's right.

**Student:** So, is this the Student Job Center?

**Agent:** It certainly is.

**Agent:** How can I help you?

**Student:** Well, actually, I'm looking for a job.

**Agent:** Uh huh.

**Student:** A part-time job.

**Student:** Do you have anything available at the moment?

**Announcer:** The student is looking for a part-time job, so part-time has been written in the space.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully, and answer questions 1 to 5.

**Agent:** Uh. Yes.

**Agent:** Are you a registered student?

**Agent:** I'm afraid this service is only available to full-time students.

**Student:** Yes, I am.

**Student:** I'm doing a degree in business studies.

**Student:** Uh. Here's my student card.

**Agent:** Which year are you in?

**Student:** Well, I've been at uni for 4 years, but I'm in the 3rd year because I took last year off.

**Agent:** Right, well, let's just have a look at what positions are available at the moment.

**Agent:** Uh. There's a job working at the reception desk at the Sports Center for three evenings a week.

**Agent:** That's Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

**Student:** Hmm. That sounds like fun, but unfortunately I have evening lectures, so that's not possible I'm afraid.

**Student:** Is there anything during the day?

**Agent:** OK, that's no good then.

**Agent:** Um. What about cleaning?

**Agent:** There's a position for a cleaner.

**Agent:** At the childcare center.

**Student:** Right.

**Agent:** But you'd need to be there at 6:00 am.

**Agent:** Does that appeal?

**Student:** 6 o'clock in the morning?

**Student:** Oh, that's far too early for me.

**Student:** I'm afraid I'd never make it that early in the morning.

**Agent:** Hmm, well, there was a position going in the computer lab for 3 days a week that might be OK.

**Agent:** Ah, here it is.

**Agent:** No, it's in the library, not the lab.

**Agent:** Uh. Clerical assistant required, I think it mostly involves putting the books back on the shelves.

**Agent:** Oh no, hang on.

**Agent:** It's for Wednesday and Friday evenings again.

**Student:** No, I can't manage that because of the lectures.

**Agent:** OK, I'm getting the idea.

**Agent:** Uh. Look, I'll just get a few details from you anyway, and then we can check through the list and see what comes up.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.

**Agent:** We'll fill in the personal details on this application form first, if that's OK.

**Student:** Yeah, that's fine.

**Agent:** Now, what's your name again?

**Student:** Anita Newman.

**Student:** Uh. That's NEWMAN.

**Agent:** And your address, Anita?

**Student:** I'm in one of the halls of residence for postgraduate students, you know International House.

**Agent:** OK, that's easy.

**Agent:** Uh. What's your room number there?

**Student:** Room B 5 6 9, uh, no, sorry, B 6 5 9.

**Student:** I always get that wrong.

**Student:** I haven't been living there very long.

**Agent:** Do you have any other skills?

**Agent:** Typing, languages, that sort of thing?

**Student:** Well, I speak some Japanese.

**Agent:** Right, I'll make a note of that.

**Agent:** Now, let's see what else is available.

**Agent:** Uh. What do you think of administrative work?

**Agent:** There's a position for an office assistant at the English Language Center.

**Student:** Hmm, that sounds interesting.

**Agent:** It's for three days a week, Monday, Friday, and Saturday mornings.

**Agent:** Interested?

**Student:** Hmm. I was hoping to have Saturdays free, but I need the work, so, uh huh, can you tell me what the job involves?

**Agent:** Yep, sure.

**Agent:** It says here that you'll be required to deal with student inquiries and answer the phone.

**Student:** Oh, I'm sure I can handle all that without a problem.

**Agent:** Great.

**Agent:** Well, would you like me to arrange an interview for you?

**Agent:** Say Friday morning around 10.

**Student:** Oh, uh, can we make it a bit later?

**Student:** Unfortunately, I've got something to do at 10.

**Student:** Would that be OK?

**Agent:** Not a problem.

**Agent:** How about 11:30.

**Agent:** Hope it works out for you, Anita.

**Student:** Me too, and thanks for all your help.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
