## Why these answers are right

**21. 5th May.** The form asks for the start date of the course. Annie works it out from her birthday: it is on May 4th and the course began the day after, so she concludes it must have been May 5th. Write 5 May (or May 5th).

**22. 16th July.** You need the finishing date. Annie guesses that Friday at the end of this week is July 15th, but Ben corrects her: Monday was the 12th, so Friday is the 16th. The course therefore ends on 16 July.

**23. clear.** Under good points for course organization, the form needs a short description. Annie suggests "Clear" and Ben agrees that the organization was clear, so clear is the comment both of them want recorded for this section.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 3, you will hear two friends discussing a course they have just done.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 27.

**Announcer:** Now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 27.

**Annie:** Oh, Ben, I just remembered, I never filled in that form for Nick.

**Ben:** Ah.

**Annie:** Did you do it?

**Ben:** The course feedback form?

**Annie:** Yes, if you want, we can do it together.

**Annie:** I've got mine here.

**Ben:** Is that OK?

**Annie:** Yeah.

**Ben:** OK, let's have a look then.

**Ben:** What do we have to do?

**Annie:** Let's fill in the top first.

**Annie:** Let's see, Course, Course code...

**Ben:** Uh, it's communication in business.

**Annie:** OK.

**Annie:** Communication in business, I do know that, but what's the code?

**Ben:** C B 1 6 something, C B 1 6 2, isn't it?

**Annie:** Hmm. That's it.

**Annie:** OK, and dates.

**Annie:** When did we start?

**Annie:** I remember my birthday's on May 4th, and it was the day after, it must have been May 5th.

**Ben:** Gosh, doesn't seem that long ago, does it?

**Annie:** No.

**Annie:** And we finish at the end of this week on Friday, so that's July 15th?

**Ben:** Er, 16th, Monday was the 12th. Right, that was the easy bit.

**Ben:** Now let's have a look.

**Ben:** "Please give your comments on the following aspects of the course".

**Ben:** OK, what's the first one?

**Ben:** Oh, course organization.

**Ben:** What do you think?

**Annie:** Uh. Clear, it was, wasn't it?

**Ben:** Yeah, I think the organization was clear.

**Annie:** Hmm.

**Ben:** OK, anything else for course organization?

**Annie:** Um. It was a good thing he gave us the course outline at the beginning in the first session.

**Annie:** That was useful, so I'll put that down, shall I?

**Ben:** Yeah.

**Annie:** Now, going on to suggestions for improvement, one thing that wasn't so good, I think we could have done a bit more work at the beginning.

**Annie:** I mean at the beginning, it seemed dead easy.

**Ben:** Yeah.

**Annie:** I thought it was gonna be really easy, and then all of a sudden, in the second half of the course, we got a whole load of work, reading to do and essays and things.

**Ben:** Yeah, it'd be better if it was more even.

**Ben:** OK, now course delivery.

**Ben:** Does that mean teaching?

**Annie:** Yeah, I suppose so.

**Annie:** Well, what I thought was really good on this course was the standard of teaching.

**Annie:** Actually, I mean some of the teachers were better than others, yeah, but the standard generally was fine, much better than other courses I've been on.

**Ben:** Yeah, I agree.

**Ben:** Hmm.

**Ben:** Let's put that then.

**Ben:** OK, what about suggestions for improvement?

**Annie:** I didn't think it was all that wonderful when we had great long group discussion sessions that went on for hours and hours.

**Ben:** Right.

**Annie:** I don't mean we shouldn't have group discussions, just that they shouldn't go on too long.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the discussion, you have some time to look at questions 28 to 30.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 28 to 30.

**Annie:** Now on to materials and equipment.

**Ben:** Oh, now what was good about some sessions was the handouts.

**Annie:** Yes, I thought all the handouts were good, actually, and some were great with website addresses and everything.

**Ben:** Hmm. One problem though with materials was the key texts.

**Annie:** Yes. There just weren't enough copies on reserve in the library.

**Annie:** And if you can't get the key text before the session, how are you supposed to do the reading?

**Annie:** Yeah, and not enough computers, you have to wait ages to get one.

**Ben:** OK, testing and evaluation.

**Ben:** Well, I don't know.

**Ben:** It's hard to say until we got our written assignments back.

**Annie:** Oh, don't talk about it.

**Annie:** I only got mine in yesterday.

**Annie:** It was a real struggle.

**Annie:** Oh, I hate to think what mark I'll get.

**Ben:** Yeah, but at least we've done the oral presentation.

**Ben:** Hmm. I thought that was good, the way I got my feedback really quickly.

**Annie:** Yes, it was.

**Annie:** And I like the way we knew what it would be evaluated on.

**Annie:** We knew the criteria, so we knew we had to think about clarity, organization, and so on.

**Ben:** Yeah, but I'm not so sure about the written work.

**Ben:** Hmm.

**Ben:** One thing I think is that there's just too much.

**Ben:** It's really stressful.

**Annie:** Oh, yes, I'd agree.

**Annie:** And I don't see why they can't let us know the criteria they use for marking.

**Ben:** The written assignments? But he told us.

**Annie:** No, for the final exams.

**Annie:** Oh. What are they looking for?

**Annie:** What are the criteria?

**Annie:** What makes a pass or a fail?

**Ben:** Yeah, I never thought of that.

**Ben:** It would be really useful.

**Annie:** Hmm. OK, any other comments?

**Ben:** I thought student support was excellent.

**Annie:** Yeah, me too.

**Annie:** OK.

**Annie:** Excellent.

**Annie:** Other comments?

**Ben:** No, I can't think of anything else.

**Annie:** Hmm, nor me.

**Annie:** OK, so that's done.

**Annie:** Thanks, Ben.

**Ben:** No.

**Ben:** Thank you.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 3.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
