## Why these answers are right

**1. 1.4 litres.** The note wants the engine size she chooses. She says her current 1.2 liter car feels slow on long trips, so she wants more power, settles on "A 1.4 should do", and rules out a 1.6. That makes 1.4 liters the size to record.

**2. automatic.** This gap asks which type of gears she wants. The salesman assumes a manual, but she corrects him with "I'd want automatic" and adds that she has never driven a manual car, so automatic is the gear type to write.

**3. light.** The note already prints "blue", so you need the word before it naming the shade. She admires the popular royal blue but then says she prefers the lighter shade called sky and decides to go for that, so sky (or light) fills the gap.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you will hear a conversation between a customer and a salesman at a car showroom.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example which has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Man:** Good morning.

**Man:** Please take a seat.

**Man:** How can I help you?

**Woman:** Well, I'm thinking of buying a new car, and I'd like some advice.

**Man:** Sure, yes.

**Man:** Had you got any particular make in mind?

**Woman:** I'm interested in a Lida.

**Woman:** I've had one before and liked it, but I haven't really made up my mind.

**Announcer:** The customer states that she is interested in a Lide, so Lida has been written in the space.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully, and answer questions 1 to 4.

**Man:** Sure, we've got various models.

**Man:** Um. Right, what about the engine size?

**Man:** Any ideas?

**Woman:** Uh. The one I've got at the moment's 1.2 liter engine, but I find it a bit slow on long journeys.

**Woman:** Hmm.

**Woman:** I'd like a bit more power this time.

**Woman:** A 1.4 should do.

**Woman:** I don't think I need a 1.6 or anything.

**Man:** Right.

**Man:** Well, I think the model you're looking at is the Max.

**Man:** Here's a picture.

**Woman:** Oh, yes.

**Woman:** Have you got one in?

**Man:** Yes, I'll take you to have a look at it in a minute.

**Man:** I'll just get a few more details.

**Man:** Uh. Is there anything else to do with the engine?

**Man:** What kind of gear change do you want?

**Man:** I presume you want a manual.

**Woman:** I'd want automatic.

**Woman:** I've never driven a car with manual gears.

**Man:** Right.

**Man:** Well now, here's the color chart for the Max.

**Man:** Have you given that any thought?

**Man:** This blue is very popular at the moment.

**Woman:** Yes, it is nice.

**Woman:** I like blue.

**Woman:** Um. What's it called?

**Woman:** Royal?

**Man:** Yes.

**Woman:** Hmm, but actually I think I prefer this lighter shade here, sky.

**Man:** Yes, that's popular too.

**Woman:** I think I'll go for that.

**Man:** You might have to wait a week or so for that color, but I assume that'll be OK.

**Woman:** Oh, yes, fine.

**Man:** Well we can go outside and you can have a good look at one, and perhaps take it out.

**Man:** Hmm. But first, can I just ask you about finance?

**Man:** The cash price is going to be somewhere in the region of seven and a half thousand.

**Man:** How would you like to pay?

**Man:** Are you in a position to pay cash, or would you need credit?

**Woman:** I'd like credit provided the terms are reasonable.

**Man:** Well, you can discuss that with my colleague in a moment.

**Man:** We have various arrangements, and would you be interested in us taking your present car as part exchange?

**Woman:** Yes.

**Man:** OK, fine.

**Man:** So I'll just need some details from you, and then we can do a valuation...

**Man:** Is that OK?

**Woman:** Fine, yes.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.

**Man:** Could I have your full name?

**Woman:** Wendy Harries, that's HARRIES.

**Man:** And is that Mrs... Miss... Ms...?

**Woman:** It's Doctor, actually.

**Man:** Oh, right.

**Man:** And your address?

**Woman:** 20 Green Banks.

**Man:** Is that 'Green' spelled as in the color?

**Woman:** Yes, that's right.

**Man:** OK.

**Woman:** Alton.

**Man:** Is that OLTON?

**Woman:** Not quite, it begins with an A, not an O.

**Man:** Oh, yes, that's in Hampshire, isn't it?

**Woman:** That's right.

**Man:** And do you know your post code?

**Woman:** Uh. Yes, it's GU89EW.

**Man:** Do you have a daytime phone number?

**Woman:** Well, I work at the hospital, but it's a bit difficult to get hold of me.

**Woman:** I can give you a number just for messages, and then I'll get back to you when I can.

**Woman:** Is that OK?

**Man:** That's fine.

**Woman:** It's 0798257643.

**Man:** Fine.

**Man:** And about the car you have now, what make is it?

**Woman:** It's a Conti.

**Man:** Do you know the year or the model name?

**Woman:** I think it's 1996 and it's called a lion, like the animal.

**Man:** Then it must be 1994 because they brought out the fox after that.

**Woman:** Oh, right, yes.

**Man:** Mileage? Roughly?

**Woman:** I'm not sure, I know it's less than 70,000.

**Man:** OK.

**Man:** What color is it?

**Woman:** It's grey, metallic grey.

**Man:** Right.

**Man:** And one last thing, what sort of condition would you say it's in?

**Woman:** I'd probably describe it as reasonable.

**Woman:** Do you need to see it?

**Woman:** It's parked outside.

**Man:** Not at the moment, no.

**Man:** Perhaps you could call in one day next week.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
