## Why these answers are right

**22. A.** The question asks when the orientation meeting happened. The lecturer says the timetable is in the handout the student should have received yesterday at the orientation meeting, and confirms there was one. Yesterday means it took place recently, option A.

**23. B.** You need the best description of lecture attendance. The lecturer says attendance is necessary, at least 90 percent is expected, and when asked whether the rule is enforced she says they are pretty strict about it. That means attendance is closely monitored, B.

**24. C.** The question asks when tutorials take place. The lecturer lists tutorial times on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all at 9:00, which is three mornings a week, option C. Each student is given one of these slots at the first lecture.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 3, in this section, you will hear a conversation between a university student and a university lecturer.

**Announcer:** Look at questions 22 to 25 for each of the questions, four alternatives are given.

**Announcer:** Decide which of the alternatives best fits what you hear on the tape.

**Announcer:** And circle the appropriate letter.

**Male Student:** Hello, uh, can I come in?

**Female Lecturer:** Oh, yes, come in.

**Female Lecturer:** How can I help you?

**Male Student:** I was looking for the economics office.

**Male Student:** I've been all over the Arts Faculty building looking for it.

**Male Student:** But I could only find the school of accounting and economic history.

**Male Student:** Is this the right place?

**Female Lecturer:** Yes, this is the School of Economics.

**Male Student:** Oh, good.

**Male Student:** Um. I'm a new student, and I was wondering if someone could give me some information.

**Female Lecturer:** Well, I might be able to help.

**Female Lecturer:** I lecture on that program.

**Female Lecturer:** What do you need to know?

**Male Student:** Oh, quite a few things actually.

**Male Student:** Firstly, how many lectures a week do I have to attend?

**Female Lecturer:** Oh, well, the Economics 1 course is a double unit, so there are two lectures a week and one tutorial.

**Female Lecturer:** Oh, the lectures are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday.

**Male Student:** What time?

**Female Lecturer:** Uh. Let me see.

**Female Lecturer:** Um. You know this information is all in the handout which you should have received yesterday at the orientation meeting.

**Male Student:** Uh. Oh, was there was there a meeting yesterday?

**Male Student:** I didn't know about that.

**Female Lecturer:** Um. No one yes, ha ha, there was, but never mind.

**Female Lecturer:** Now the lectures are at 4 in the afternoon.

**Male Student:** Oh, four's a bit late.

**Male Student:** I've got a part-time job that starts at 4:30.

**Female Lecturer:** Well, you can't be in two places at once, can you?

**Female Lecturer:** And attendance at lectures is necessary.

**Female Lecturer:** We expect at least 90% attendance at this university, you know?

**Male Student:** 90 percent, that's high.

**Male Student:** Do they enforce that rule?

**Female Lecturer:** Yes we do.

**Female Lecturer:** We're pretty strict about it actually.

**Male Student:** And what times have been set down for the tutorials?

**Male Student:** Do you have that information?

**Female Lecturer:** That's a very well attended course, so there's a number of tutorial times, um, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all at 9:00.

**Female Lecturer:** Yours will be allocated at the first lecture.

**Male Student:** Can't I choose the time?

**Female Lecturer:** Maybe maybe not, you'll have to talk to the lecturer on the course.

**Female Lecturer:** Dr. Roberts is his name.

**Male Student:** Oh.

**Male Student:** OK.

**Announcer:** Now look at questions 26 to 31.

**Announcer:** As the conversation continues, complete the notes in the spaces provided.

**Female Lecturer:** Anything else I can help you with while you're here?

**Male Student:** Well, yes, actually.

**Male Student:** Do you know what the course requirements are?

**Male Student:** I mean, how much work is expected for this course?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, you have to complete a tutorial paper.

**Male Student:** What does that involve?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, it's a piece of work on a given topic, based on some set reading texts.

**Female Lecturer:** You'll have to give a small talk to your tutorial group.

**Male Student:** Hmm, how long does that have to be?

**Female Lecturer:** Oh, about 25 minutes usually.

**Male Student:** I have to talk for 25 minutes.

**Female Lecturer:** Yes, that's right.

**Female Lecturer:** And then you have to write up your piece of work, and give it to the lecturer to be marked.

**Male Student:** Right, uh, and is that all?

**Female Lecturer:** No, you also have to complete a 3,000 word essay on a topic.

**Male Student:** Can I choose the topic?

**Female Lecturer:** Yes, usually you can.

**Male Student:** Right, huh, that shouldn't be too bad.

**Female Lecturer:** And in addition to that, there is an exam.

**Male Student:** An exam!

**Male Student:** What sort of exam?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, it's an open book exam.

**Male Student:** Does that mean I can have the textbook with me during the exam?

**Female Lecturer:** Yes, that's right.

**Male Student:** And can you give me any idea about the content of the first year of economics, so that I can get into some reading?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, you'll be getting the reading list next week when lectures start.

**Female Lecturer:** All the books are in the library.

**Male Student:** Yes, but won't everyone else take them out as soon as they get the reading list too?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, yes, they might. But most of the important ones are held in Closed Reserve.

**Female Lecturer:** That's a part of the library where you can go to read books, but you can't take them out of the building.

**Male Student:** What did you call that section of the library?

**Female Lecturer:** Closed Reserve.

**Female Lecturer:** However, we do recommend that you buy the core books.

**Female Lecturer:** You'll find them useful, and you'll need them for the exam.

**Male Student:** Yes, I suppose I will.

**Male Student:** But what is the focus of the course?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, the course at this university has a vocational focus.

**Female Lecturer:** That is a focus on preparing its graduates for work, so we're oriented very much towards employment.

**Male Student:** Oh, so my chances of getting a job are good?

**Female Lecturer:** Well, provided you get good results.

**Male Student:** Well look, thanks for your time.

**Male Student:** You've been really helpful.

**Female Lecturer:** Ha ha, that's fine.

**Female Lecturer:** See you next week then.

**Announcer:** That is the end of Section 3.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
