## Why these answers are right

**1. Ferrier.** The administrator reads the surname back with an A after the F. The caller corrects her: the second letter is E, and he spells the whole name as F, E, double R, I, E, R, which gives Ferrier.

**2. 900418.** The caller gives his mobile as ending nine-double-oh, four-eight-one, then says he always muddles the end and changes the last three digits to four-one-eight. The administrator reads back 900418, which completes the number after 07700.

**3. 21 November.** Two weekends are offered, starting on the seventh and on the twenty-first of November. The caller has a friend's wedding on the first one, so he takes the later weekend, and the administrator records the twenty-first of November.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Part 1. You will hear a man phoning a community workshop to enrol on a weekend woodwork course.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5.

**Announcer:** Now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 5.

**Pauline:** Good afternoon, Larchmere Community Workshop, Pauline speaking.

**Rhys:** Oh, hi there. I'm ringing about your weekend woodwork courses. I'd like to sign up for one, if there's still space.

**Pauline:** Lovely. There's room on all three at the moment, so let me take your details first, and then I'll run through the options.

**Pauline:** Could I have your name, please?

**Rhys:** Sure, it's Rhys Ferrier.

**Pauline:** Ferrier. Is that F, A, R, R, I, E, R?

**Rhys:** Close, but there's an E after the F, not an A. So it's F, E, double R, I, E, R.

**Rhys:** People often write it like farrier, the person who puts shoes on horses, but mine's got an E.

**Pauline:** Got it, thanks. And what's the best number to reach you on?

**Rhys:** My mobile's oh-seven-seven-oh-oh, nine-double-oh, four-eight-one.

**Rhys:** No, sorry, I always muddle the end of it. It's four-one-eight. So nine-double-oh, four-one-eight.

**Pauline:** Oh-seven-seven-oh-oh, nine-double-oh, four-one-eight. Lovely.

**Pauline:** Now, all three courses run on the same weekends. The next two are the weekend of the seventh of November and the weekend of the twenty-first.

**Rhys:** The seventh would've been ideal, but I've just remembered I'm at a mate's wedding that weekend.

**Rhys:** So it'll have to be the later one, the twenty-first.

**Pauline:** The twenty-first of November, then. I've put that down.

**Pauline:** Next, how would you describe your experience? We ask so we can pair people up sensibly at the benches.

**Rhys:** I'd probably say intermediate. I built a deck in the back garden last summer, and it's still standing.

**Pauline:** Did you use hand tools much for that? Chisels, planes, that sort of thing?

**Rhys:** Hmm, not really, now you mention it. It was mostly a power drill and a circular saw.

**Rhys:** So you'd better put me down as a beginner. I'd rather start at the bottom than feel lost.

**Pauline:** Beginner it is. And the last thing on the form: is there anything about your health we should know? It can get quite dusty in the workshop.

**Rhys:** Well, I get hay fever, but only in the spring, so that won't matter in November.

**Rhys:** The thing worth mentioning is that I've got mild asthma. Sawdust sets it off now and then.

**Pauline:** Thanks for telling me. I'll write down mild asthma, and we'll give you a bench near the extractor fan. There are dust masks as well.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.

**Pauline:** Right, the three courses. The shortest is the Taster, which is just the Saturday morning.

**Rhys:** What can you actually make in a morning?

**Pauline:** It's hand tools only, so it's a gentle start, and nobody goes near the machines.

**Pauline:** Everyone carves a spoon, and you take it home with you at lunchtime.

**Rhys:** Nice. And how much is the Taster?

**Pauline:** It's forty pounds. Oh, hang on, I'm looking at last year's price list. It's forty-five now.

**Rhys:** That's still pretty reasonable.

**Pauline:** Then there's the Foundation, which is the full Saturday and Sunday. That's a hundred and sixty-five pounds, and you make a picture frame.

**Pauline:** The real point of it is learning to cut a neat corner joint. It's called a mitre joint, that's M, I, T, R, E.

**Rhys:** M, I, T, R, E. I've seen that word written down, but I've never known how to say it.

**Pauline:** You're not the only one! And finally there's the Furniture course. That's also Saturday and Sunday, plus a short evening session in the week before.

**Rhys:** What's the evening session for?

**Pauline:** It's a safety lesson on the big machines, like the bandsaw. The leaflet says it's on a Thursday, but we've had to move it to Wednesday this term.

**Rhys:** Wednesday would be fine, if I went for that one. What do you make on it?

**Pauline:** A stool. Some people are hoping for a tall bar stool, but those take far too long to finish in a weekend.

**Pauline:** So it's a step stool, the little kind you stand on to reach a high cupboard. That course is two hundred and eighty pounds, with all the timber included.

**Rhys:** That sounds great, but I'd better be realistic, since I've just called myself a beginner.

**Rhys:** I'll go for the Foundation, and maybe save the Furniture course for the spring.

**Pauline:** Very sensible. I'll send a text to your mobile this afternoon to confirm, with a link for paying the fee.

**Rhys:** Brilliant. Thanks so much for your help, Pauline.

**Pauline:** You're welcome, Rhys. See you on the twenty-first.

**Announcer:** That is the end of Part 1. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers.
