## Why these answers are right

**1. 75.** The notes ask for the cost of attending all three days. The woman first asks about two separate days at GBP 35 each, but after choosing the full three days she asks about the fees, and the clerk replies that it is GBP 75.

**2. cheque.** The gap names a payment method other than paying on arrival. The clerk rules out credit cards and says she must send a cheque or pay at the conference office, and the woman decides that paying by cheque is easiest. The spelling check is also accepted.

**3. 15.** This gap is the nightly price of the basic rooms at the conference center itself. The clerk says those rooms are only GBP 15 per night, with no breakfast, and are in the same building as the conference rooms, matching the note.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you will hear a telephone conversation between a woman and the reservations clerk at a conference center.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Clerk:** Conference center reservations.

**Clerk:** Good morning.

**Woman:** Hi, I'm interested in the Computing Conference next month.

**Clerk:** Future directions in computing?

**Woman:** Yes, that's right.

**Announcer:** The title of the course is Future Directions in computing.

**Announcer:** So, future directions has been written in the space.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully, and answer questions 1 to 5.

**Clerk:** Conference center reservations.

**Clerk:** Good morning.

**Woman:** Hi, I'm interested in the Computing Conference next month.

**Clerk:** Future directions in computing?

**Woman:** Yes, that's right.

**Woman:** Could I ask you a few questions about it?

**Clerk:** Of course.

**Woman:** OK, I know the conference is for 3 days, but actually I want to attend on the Friday and Saturday only.

**Woman:** Will that work out to be any cheaper?

**Clerk:** Let me have a look.

**Clerk:** Well, you could register for the 2 days separately, but that wouldn't actually save you very much, as it still costs GBP 35 for each day, in fact.

**Clerk:** If you could register for the three days, you also get an invitation to a free dinner on the Saturday night.

**Clerk:** So that's probably the better option.

**Woman:** Right, I'll do that.

**Woman:** How much will the fees be in that case?

**Clerk:** It's GBP 75.

**Woman:** All right. I'd like to register for the full 3 days.

**Woman:** Now can I pay that by credit card?

**Clerk:** I'm afraid not.

**Clerk:** You'll have to send a cheque to us, or you can pay at the conference office.

**Woman:** Fine, so it's probably easiest if I pay by cheque.

**Woman:** Now then, what else do I need to arrange?

**Woman:** Right, how about accommodation?

**Woman:** I guess that's not included in the price.

**Clerk:** No, I'm sorry, it's not.

**Clerk:** But we do have a few rooms available for delegates at the conference center, if you'd like.

**Clerk:** Those are very cheap, but if you're interested, you'll need to book soon, because there's always a heavy demand for them.

**Clerk:** They are only GBP 15 per night, but they are very basic, and you'd have to get your own breakfast, because they don't provide you with that, but it's very convenient.

**Clerk:** Because it's in the same building as the conference rooms.

**Woman:** Uh-huh.

**Clerk:** Or there's a very reasonable guest house, which is GBP 25 per night, and I think that includes your breakfast.

**Woman:** Is it close to the conference center?

**Clerk:** It would be about a 10 minute walk away from here.

**Woman:** I see.

**Woman:** That sounds quite reasonable.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.

**Clerk:** The details are all in our conference pack, which I'll send you.

**Woman:** Great, thanks.

**Woman:** That'll be very useful.

**Woman:** Oh, and can you also send me an application form?

**Clerk:** Of course, I'll get that in the post to you straight away.

**Clerk:** Is there anything else?

**Woman:** Yes, actually.

**Woman:** Can you tell me where exactly the conference center is?

**Clerk:** Well, it's on South Park Road, and it's right at the end of the road next to the library.

**Clerk:** It's a 10 minute taxi ride from the station, and will cost you GBP 5.

**Clerk:** Otherwise you can take the bus which runs every half an hour from the station.

**Clerk:** That's the 21A, and it brings you straight to the conference center.

**Woman:** Right, got that.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
