## Why these answers are right

**1. B.** The question asks which floor Gavin lives on. Diane explains that ground-floor apartments cost more to insure, and Gavin first says "third" but corrects himself straight away to the 2nd floor, so B is right. The ground floor is only part of Diane's explanation about break-ins.

**2. A.** Here you need the monthly rent. When Diane asks how much the rent is, Gavin replies with $615 per month, which matches option A exactly. The other two amounts, $650 and $655, are never mentioned as rent; they only sound similar to the real figure.

**3. fridge.** The table pairs an item with the value $450. Gavin lists a fridge and a stereo system, and Diane asks what he paid for the fridge; his reply is $450 (he confirms fifty, not fifteen). So the missing item is fridge, and refrigerator is accepted too.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, Gavin, a newly arrived student, wants to insure the contents of his apartment.

**Announcer:** He calls an insurance agent to ask for information.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 6.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Diane:** Good morning, Diane Davies.

**Diane:** Can I help you?

**Gavin:** Yes, I'd like to get some insurance for the contents of my home.

**Diane:** Fine.

**Diane:** Uh. When did you move into the house?

**Gavin:** A couple of weeks ago, and it's an apartment actually.

**Gavin:** I was told by the landlord that it would be a good idea to get some insurance for the furniture and other personal possessions.

**Announcer:** Gavin moved into his apartment 2 weeks ago, so B has been circled.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully to the conversation and answer questions 1 to 6.

**Diane:** Fine.

**Diane:** Well, uh, let's get some details.

**Diane:** What kind of apartment is it?

**Gavin:** It's a 2 bedroom apartment.

**Diane:** Huh, uh, what floor is it on?

**Gavin:** Um. Why do you need to know that?

**Diane:** Because it affects the cost of the insurance.

**Diane:** An apartment on the ground floor isn't as protected as others.

**Diane:** And there's more chance of a break-in.

**Gavin:** Really?

**Gavin:** I didn't know that.

**Gavin:** Um. It's on the third, no, uh, 2nd floor.

**Diane:** Second...

**Diane:** and how much is the rent?

**Gavin:** It's $615 per month.

**Diane:** Good.

**Diane:** And where is it located?

**Gavin:** In Biggins Street, South Hills.

**Diane:** I see, and what things did you want to insure?

**Gavin:** Well, what do you recommend?

**Diane:** Well, uh, the most important things are those which you would normally find in a home.

**Diane:** Things like the television, fridge, and so on.

**Gavin:** I see.

**Gavin:** Well, I've got a fridge and a stereo system which I've just bought from a friend.

**Diane:** And how much did you pay for the fridge?

**Gavin:** Uh. $450.

**Diane:** Uh, so, 50 or 15?

**Gavin:** 50.

**Gavin:** And the stereo system cost $1,150.

**Diane:** Uh. Have you got a television?

**Gavin:** Yes, but it's very old, and not worth much.

**Diane:** OK, uh, well, is there anything else you want to insure?

**Gavin:** Yes, I've got a couple of watches and my CDs and books.

**Diane:** How much do you think they're worth?

**Gavin:** The watches are worth $1,000.

**Diane:** For both of them?

**Gavin:** No, each one, and all together, the CDs and books cost me about $400.

**Diane:** OK, so the value of everything you want to insure is $4,000.

**Gavin:** Hmm, how much will the insurance cost?

**Diane:** Let me see $4,000 divided by plus 10% right, so, this kind of insurance, uh, that's private contents insurance.

**Diane:** Um. It comes to yeah, $184 for a 12 month period.

**Gavin:** $184 well, that sounds pretty good.

**Gavin:** OK, I'll take that policy.

**Announcer:** Before the conversation continues, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen carefully and answer questions 7 to 10.

**Gavin:** Can I arrange the policy over the phone?

**Diane:** Sure, just let me get the details down.

**Diane:** So, that's Mr Gavin Murray.

**Gavin:** That's MURRAY.

**Gavin:** And the address is 16C.

**Gavin:** Biggins Street, South Hills.

**Diane:** OK, 16C, Biggins Street.

**Diane:** South Hills.

**Gavin:** That's right.

**Gavin:** It's two words, 'South Hills'.

**Diane:** And your date of birth is?

**Gavin:** 12 of November 1980.

**Diane:** And your contact number?

**Gavin:** Home phone number is 98724855.

**Diane:** Right, and you're Australian?

**Gavin:** No, I was born in London, although my mother is from Tasmania.

**Diane:** Oh, really?

**Diane:** Whereabouts?

**Gavin:** Hobart.

**Diane:** I see.

**Diane:** Interesting place.

**Diane:** Now, are you working at the moment?

**Gavin:** No.

**Gavin:** I'm a full-time student at Sydney University.

**Diane:** Right, good.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You will now have half a minute to check your answers.
