# Keiko's Homestay Arrangement: answers and explanations

## Why these answers are right

**1. Keiko.** The form already shows the surname, so this gap asks for her first name. When the officer asks for it, the student answers "It's Keiko" and spells it K-E-I-K-O, so Keiko is correct, and your spelling must match the letters she gives.

**2. JO6337.** The note needs her passport number. After she hands the passport over, the officer reads it aloud as JO6337. Copy the two letters and four digits exactly as spoken, because a code like this is marked wrong if any character is missing or swapped.

**3. 4 months.** The form asks for the approximate length of the homestay, and approx is already printed. Asked how long she plans to stay, Keiko says about four months, maybe longer if she likes it, so 4 months fills the gap.

**Officer:** Yes, what can I do for you?

**Student:** My friend is in homestay, and she really enjoys it.

**Student:** So I'd like to join a family as well.

**Officer:** OK, so let me get some details.

**Officer:** What's your name?

**Student:** My name is Keiko Yuichini.

**Officer:** Could you spell your family name for me?

**Student:** It's Yuichini.

**Student:** That's YUICHINI.

**Announcer:** The student's surname is Yuichini.

**Announcer:** So, Yuichini has been written on the form.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully, and answer questions 1 to 6.

**Officer:** Yes, what can I do for you?

**Student:** My friend is in homestay, and she really enjoys it.

**Student:** I'm 28 years old.

**Officer:** Now you live at one of the colleges, which one?

**Student:** Willow College, um, room 21C.

**Officer:** Right, 21C Willow College. And how long are you planning on staying with homestay?

**Student:** About four months, longer if I like it.

**Officer:** And what course are you enrolled in?

**Student:** Well, I've enrolled for 20 weeks in the advanced English studies, because I need help with my writing, and I'm nearly at the end of my first 5 week course.

**Officer:** OK.

**Officer:** Do you have any preference for a family with children or without children?

**Student:** I prefer, I mean, I like young children, but I'd like to be with older people.

**Student:** You know, adults, someone around my age.

**Officer:** OK, and what about pets?

**Student:** I am a veterinarian, so that's fine.

**Student:** The more the better.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 7 to 10.

**Officer:** All right, now what about you?

**Officer:** Are you a vegetarian, or do you have any special food requirements?

**Student:** No, I am not a vegetarian, but I don't eat a lot of meat.

**Student:** I really like seafood.

**Officer:** And what are your hobbies?

**Student:** I like reading and going to the movies.

**Officer:** Do you play any sports?

**Student:** Yes, I joined the handball team.

**Student:** But I didn't like that, so I stopped playing.

**Student:** Now I play tennis on the weekend with my friends.

**Officer:** All right, let's see.

**Officer:** Name, age, uh, now the location.

**Officer:** Are you familiar with the public transport system?

**Student:** No, I'm not really, because I have been living on campus.

**Student:** I've been to the city a few times on the bus, but they are always late.

**Officer:** What about the trains?

**Student:** I like catching the train.

**Student:** They are much faster.
