## Why these answers are right

**1. keep-fit.** The notes list the facilities the club offers besides golf. After ruling out tennis and football, the receptionist says the club does have a keep fit studio that members like, so keep-fit, or keep-fit studio, fills the first facility line.

**2. swimming.** Straight after the keep fit studio, the receptionist adds that as well as that there's swimming of course, and the caller replies that he likes to swim every day. Swimming is therefore the second facility available at the club.

**3. yoga.** The notes need a second class alongside kick-boxing. Judo and stretch classes are only planned for later, while the club is currently running a range of yoga classes, so yoga is the class that is available now.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you will hear a man telephoning a sports club to ask about membership and facilities.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Woman:** Good morning, oh, sorry, it's gone 12.

**Woman:** I'll start again.

**Woman:** Uh. Good afternoon, Kingswell Sports Club.

**Woman:** How can I help you?

**Man:** Oh, good afternoon.

**Man:** I was wondering if you could give me some information about membership and facilities.

**Announcer:** The name of the sports club is Kingswell.

**Announcer:** So, Kingswell has been written in the space.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully, and answer questions 1 to 4.

**Woman:** Of course.

**Woman:** What would you like to know?

**Man:** Do you have tennis courts for example?

**Woman:** No, I'm afraid we don't.

**Woman:** We're primarily a golf club.

**Man:** What about football?

**Man:** I heard you had a team.

**Woman:** No, I'm sorry.

**Woman:** Perhaps you're thinking about Fresham Sports Center.

**Man:** Oh, right.

**Man:** I know it.

**Man:** I've played badminton there.

**Woman:** Have you?

**Woman:** They've got a lot of facilities we don't have, and vice versa.

**Woman:** We do have a keep fit studio, which is very popular with members, and then as well as that, there's swimming of course.

**Man:** That's good, I like to swim every day.

**Woman:** We have a range of classes too.

**Man:** Do you have judo classes?

**Man:** I'm keen to learn.

**Woman:** Well, at the moment, we offer kickboxing.

**Woman:** We're planning to add judo and stretch classes soon.

**Woman:** We're currently running a range of yoga classes too.

**Man:** What about relaxing after exercise?

**Man:** I assume you have a restaurant or something.

**Woman:** At the moment, we've got a salad bar, which is very popular.

**Woman:** We'll also have a fully licensed restaurant by the end of the year.

**Man:** Sounds good.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.

**Woman:** What kind of membership are you interested in?

**Man:** Um. Not really sure.

**Man:** Uh. What are the options?

**Woman:** Well, there are 3 different membership schemes.

**Man:** I see.

**Man:** What's the difference?

**Woman:** Well, the first one's called Gold, and you can use all the facilities at any time of the day or week.

**Woman:** You can also join in as many classes as you like for free.

**Man:** That sounds good.

**Man:** Is it very expensive?

**Woman:** Well, you pay a GBP 250 joining fee.

**Woman:** And then it's GBP 450 - oh, no, I'm sorry, it's just gone up by GBP 50.

**Woman:** Uh. Sorry about that.

**Woman:** It's now GBP 500 for the annual subscription fee.

**Man:** Right, got that.

**Man:** And what's the next type?

**Woman:** Well, that's Silver, it's the same as Gold, except you have to pay a small fee of GBP 1 per lesson for any you do.

**Woman:** And you can only use the center at certain times.

**Man:** I see.

**Man:** So when exactly?

**Woman:** You can only use the facilities between 10 am and 4:30 pm.

**Man:** So I couldn't use the pool at 8 in the morning or evening then.

**Woman:** That's right.

**Man:** OK, and the price for that is the joining fee the same as for gold?

**Woman:** Actually it's slightly less than the GBP 250.

**Woman:** It's GBP 225, but the annual fee is only GBP 300. Does that sound more like what you want?

**Man:** Well, it's still rather more expensive than I thought.

**Man:** I'm a student here in England, and I'm only here for 6 months.

**Woman:** Ah. Then the Bronze scheme would probably suit you best.

**Man:** Uh. How is that different?

**Woman:** Well, some of the facilities have restricted use.

**Man:** And do I have to pay for classes?

**Woman:** Yes, it's GBP 3 for each class you join.

**Man:** I see.

**Man:** And what are the hours then?

**Woman:** Between 10:30 and 3:30 weekdays only, and you pay a GBP 50 joining fee.

**Woman:** The annual fee is GBP 180 it works out at GBP 15 a month, so that would be quite a lot cheaper.

**Man:** Oh, that should be all right.

**Man:** I could come in my free periods.

**Man:** What do I have to do if I want to join?

**Woman:** Well, we book you in for an assessment with an instructor, who will show you how to use all the equipment.

**Woman:** If you want to organize a trial session and look around the center, you'll need to speak to David Kynchley.

**Man:** Hmm. Could you spell that please?

**Woman:** Yes, David, KYNCHLEY.

**Woman:** I'll give you his direct line number.

**Woman:** It's 045895311.

**Man:** Thanks.

**Woman:** Thank you for calling Kingswell Sports Club.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
