## Why these answers are right

**1. B.** The question asks who may park on campus. The female student says parking is possible for postgraduate students but not for undergraduates, because there simply isn't room for everyone. That matches B; nobody mentions a staff-only rule or a complete ban on student parking.

**2. D.** You need the building that houses the administration office. The woman says it is in the building called Block G, right next to Block E, and the man repeats Block G to check. So D is correct; Block E is only a landmark beside the office.

**3. C.** The question asks what happens to a car without a sticker. The woman rejects clamping, says they tow your car away, and then adds that they fine you as well because you must pay to get the car back. Towing plus a fine is option C.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you will hear a student inquiring about parking facilities.

**Announcer:** First, look at questions 1 to 4.

**Announcer:** For each of the questions, four alternatives are given.

**Announcer:** Decide which of the alternatives a, b, c or d best fits what you hear on the tape.

**Announcer:** And circle the appropriate letter.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example which has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to the example will be played first.

**Male Student:** How do you come to the university each day?

**Male Student:** Train or bus or do you have a car?

**Female Student:** Oh, I always walk.

**Female Student:** I haven't got a car, and anyway, I live quite close.

**Announcer:** The woman says she always walks, so C has been circled.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Now listen carefully to the first conversation, and answer questions 1 to 4.

**Male Student:** How do you come to the university each day?

**Male Student:** Train or bus or do you have a car?

**Female Student:** Oh, I always walk.

**Female Student:** I haven't got a car, and anyway, I live quite close.

**Male Student:** Do you know anything about parking rights on the campus?

**Male Student:** I was wondering whether students are allowed to park their cars on campus or not.

**Female Student:** Um. Yes.

**Female Student:** I think it's possible for postgraduate students, but not for undergraduate students.

**Male Student:** That doesn't seem very fair.

**Female Student:** No, I suppose not, but there simply isn't enough room on the campus for everyone to park.

**Male Student:** Hmm. Do you need a parking permit?

**Female Student:** Yeah, I believe you do.

**Male Student:** Where do I get that from?

**Female Student:** Um. I think you can get a parking sticker from the administration office.

**Male Student:** Where's that?

**Female Student:** It's in the building called Block G, right next to Block E.

**Male Student:** Block G?

**Female Student:** Yeah.

**Male Student:** Oh right.

**Male Student:** And what happens to you if you don't buy a sticker?

**Male Student:** Do they clamp your wheels or give you a fine?

**Female Student:** No, I think they tow your car away.

**Male Student:** Oh, really?

**Female Student:** Yeah, yeah, yeah.

**Female Student:** And then they fine you as well, because you have to pay to get the car back.

**Male Student:** I'd better get the sticker then.

**Female Student:** Yeah.

**Male Student:** Where exactly is the administration office again?

**Male Student:** I'm new to this university, and I'm still trying to find my way around.

**Female Student:** Right.

**Female Student:** You go along Library Road, past the tennis courts on your left, and the swimming pool on your right, yeah, and the administration office is opposite the car park on the left, you can't miss it.

**Male Student:** So, it's up Library Road, past the swimming pool, opposite the car park.

**Male Student:** Right, I'll go straight over there.

**Male Student:** Bye, and thanks for the help.

**Announcer:** Now you have some time to look at questions 5 to 12.

**Announcer:** As you listen to the next conversation, complete the application form in the spaces numbered 5 to 10, and answer the questions numbers 11 to 12.

**Clerk:** Good morning.

**Clerk:** Can I help you?

**Male Student:** Yes, I was told to come over here to get a parking sticker.

**Male Student:** Is this the right place?

**Clerk:** Uh. Yes, it is.

**Clerk:** Um. Are you a postgraduate student?

**Male Student:** Yes, I am.

**Clerk:** OK, well I'll just need to take some details.

**Clerk:** Uh. Your name?

**Male Student:** Richard Lee, that's spelt L double E.

**Clerk:** Richard Lee. And the address?

**Male Student:** Flat 13, 30 Enmore Road.

**Clerk:** How do you spell Enmore?

**Male Student:** ENMORE.

**Male Student:** And that's in the suburb of Newport:

**Male Student:** NEWPORT.

**Clerk:** Hmm.

**Clerk:** Faculty?

**Male Student:** I beg your pardon?

**Clerk:** Uh. Which faculty are you in?

**Clerk:** Oh.

**Male Student:** Architecture, the Faculty of Architecture.

**Clerk:** Right, and the registration number of your car.

**Male Student:** Uh. Let me see, um, LXJ50... oh, no, sorry.

**Male Student:** I always get that wrong.

**Male Student:** It's LJX058K.

**Clerk:** LJX508K.

**Male Student:** No, 058K.

**Male Student:** Ah.

**Clerk:** Um. And what make is the car?

**Male Student:** It's a Ford.

**Clerk:** A Ford.

**Clerk:** Fine.

**Clerk:** Well, um, I'll just get you to sign here, and when you've paid the cashier, I'll be able to issue you with a sticker.

**Male Student:** Oh, oh, where do I pay?

**Clerk:** Uh. Just across the corridor in the cashier's office.

**Clerk:** Oh, but it's, uh, it's 12:30 now, and they close at 12:15 for lunch.

**Clerk:** Uh. But they open again at a 2:15 until 4:30.

**Male Student:** Oh, and they're not open till 2:15, no.

**Clerk:** Uh. When you get your sticker, you must attach it to the front windscreen of your car.

**Clerk:** I'm afraid it's not valid if you don't have it stuck on the window.

**Male Student:** Right, I see.

**Male Student:** Thanks very much.

**Male Student:** I'll, um, I'll just wait here then.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
