## Why these answers are right

**1. C.** The question asks what George saw in the library lobby. He says there was a video with all the highlights of the festival at a stand there, which matches option C. He heard the group play, but only on that video, not as a live performance.

**2. B.** You need George's reason for sitting at the back. Nina prefers the front for a really good view, but George says that at the back you can actually hear the whole thing better. Hearing better matches B, hear clearly; the view belongs to Nina's front-row idea.

**3. 48 North Avenue.** The form needs the street part of the address, since Westsea is already printed. George reads out his address as 48 North Avenue, Westsea, so the gap takes 48 North Avenue: a number plus two words, which fits the limit of two words and a number.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you will hear a conversation between two friends called George and Nina about a summer music festival.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 and 2.

**Announcer:** You will see that there is an example that has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Nina:** Hi, George.

**Nina:** Glad you're back.

**Nina:** Loads of people have phoned you.

**George:** Really?

**Nina:** I felt just like your secretary.

**George:** Sorry.

**George:** I went into the library this afternoon to have a look at a newspaper, and I came across something really interesting.

**Nina:** What?

**Nina:** A book?

**George:** No, a brochure from a summer festival, mainly Spanish music.

**George:** Look, I've got it here.

**Announcer:** George says that he found a brochure from a festival, so b has been circled as the answer.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully and answer questions 1 and 2.

**Nina:** Spanish music.

**Nina:** I really love the guitar.

**Nina:** Hmm. Let's have a look.

**Nina:** So what's this group 'Guitarrini'?

**George:** They're really good.

**George:** They had a video with all the highlights of the festival at a stand in the lobby to the library.

**George:** So I heard them.

**George:** They play fantastic instruments, drums and flutes and old kinds of guitars.

**George:** I've never heard anything like it before.

**Nina:** Sounds great.

**George:** OK, shall we go then?

**George:** Spoil ourselves?

**Nina:** Yes, let's.

**George:** The only problem is there aren't any cheap seats. It's all one price.

**Nina:** Hmm. Well, in that case, we could sit right at the front.

**Nina:** We'd have a really good view.

**George:** Yeah, though, I think that if you sit at the back, you can actually hear the whole thing better.

**Nina:** Hmm. Yes, anyway we can decide when we get there.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 3 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 3 to 10.

**Nina:** So will you fill in the form or shall I?

**George:** I'll do it.

**George:** Name: George O'Neill.

**George:** Address: 48 North Avenue, Westsea.

**George:** Do you remember our new postcode?

**George:** Still can't remember it.

**Nina:** Hmm. Just a minute, I've got it written down here.

**Nina:** WS62YH.

**Nina:** Do you need the phone too?

**George:** Please, I'm really bad at numbers.

**Nina:** 01674553242.

**Nina:** So, let's book two tickets for Guitarrini.

**George:** OK, if you're sure GBP 7.50 each is all right.

**George:** How do you feel about the singer?

**Nina:** Hmm. I haven't quite decided, but I've noticed something on the booking form that might just persuade me.

**George:** What's that then?

**Nina:** Free refreshments!

**George:** Really?

**Nina:** Yes, look here.

**Nina:** Sunday, 17th of June. Singer, ticket GBP 6.00 includes drinks in the garden.

**George:** Sounds like a bargain to me.

**Nina:** Yes, let's book two tickets for that.

**Nina:** So what else?

**Nina:** I'm feeling quite keen now.

**Nina:** How about the pianist on the 22nd of June?

**George:** Anna Ventura? I've just remembered that's my evening class night.

**Nina:** Hmm. That's OK.

**Nina:** I'll just have to go on my own.

**Nina:** But we can go to the Spanish dance and guitar concert together, can't we?

**George:** Yes, I'm sure Tom and Kieran would enjoy that too.

**George:** Good heavens, GBP 10.50 a ticket.

**George:** I can see we're going to have to go without food for the rest of the week.

**George:** We'll need to book four.

**Nina:** Uh. Wish we were students.

**Nina:** Look, children, students and senior citizens get a 50% discount on everything.

**George:** If only.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
