## Why these answers are right

**1. C.** You need the picture that shows where the admin building stands. Reading the campus map, the woman says you go straight up the steps and turn left, so the building sits on the left side of the steps, which is what picture C shows.

**2. A.** The question asks for the size of the queue. When they reach the hall, the woman estimates that there must be at least 50 people in the queue, so the number she gives is 50, option A.

**3. B.** This asks which food the woman finally orders. She first says takeaway fried rice sounds good, but then changes her mind on second thoughts and asks for a cheese and tomato sandwich, so the picture of sandwiches, B, is correct.

**Male Student:** So, I'm trying to find the admin building too, so I can register for my course.

**Male Student:** I don't seem to be having much luck.

**Female Student:** Well, um, look, according to this map of the campus here, you go straight up the steps, uh huh, turn left.

**Female Student:** And the building on the right.

**Female Student:** OK, let's see if we can find it.

**Male Student:** Oh, this looks right.

**Male Student:** Yeah, yeah, it must be.

**Male Student:** Look, there are hundreds of other people here.

**Female Student:** Oh, there must be at least 50 people in the queue.

**Female Student:** We'll be here till gone 2:00 at this rate.

**Male Student:** Yeah, I'm starving.

**Female Student:** So am I.

**Male Student:** Actually, I was on my way to the canteen to get something for lunch.

**Male Student:** Uh. Why don't I go to the canteen and buy something, and you stay here and wait?

**Female Student:** Good idea.

**Male Student:** What would you like?

**Male Student:** Pizza, sandwich, hot dog, fried rice, they do everything.

**Female Student:** Oh, something easy.

**Female Student:** Takeaway fried rice sounds good.

**Male Student:** OK, fried rice.

**Female Student:** No, no, on on second thoughts, I'll have a cheese and tomato sandwich.

**Male Student:** Right, 1 cheese and tomato.

**Male Student:** Anything to drink?

**Female Student:** Yeah, get me a coffee, would you?

**Male Student:** Uh. Hot coffee is a bit hard to carry.

**Male Student:** What about a Coke or an orange juice?

**Female Student:** Um. Get me an orange juice then.

**Female Student:** Look, here's five dollars.

**Male Student:** Oh, take two dollars back, it shouldn't cost me more than three dollars.

**Female Student:** Well, keep the five and we'll sort it out later.

**Female Student:** Oh, and could you give me an apple as well?

**Male Student:** OK, back in a minute.

**Announcer:** The woman speaks to the clerk about registering at university.

**Announcer:** Look at questions 6 to 10.

**Announcer:** As you listen, complete the form by filling in the numbered spaces 6 to 10.

**Female Student:** Oh, hello.

**Female Student:** I'm here to register for the first year law course.

**Clerk:** Oh, I'll just have to fill out this form for our records.

**Clerk:** Um. What's your name?

**Female Student:** Julia Perkins.

**Clerk:** Can you spell it for me?

**Female Student:** Yeah, that's um, JULIA PERKINS.

**Clerk:** Address?

**Female Student:** Flat 5, 15 Waratah Road, that's WARATAH, Brisbane.

**Clerk:** Brisbane.

**Clerk:** Oh, and your telephone number?

**Female Student:** Oh, we haven't got the phone on yet. We've only just moved in.

**Clerk:** OK, well can you let us have the number once the phone's connected, and I'll make a note here to be advised.

**Clerk:** And the course?

**Female Student:** I beg your pardon?

**Clerk:** What course are you doing?

**Female Student:** Oh, um, First Year Law.

**Clerk:** Right.

**Clerk:** Well, you'll have to go across to the Law Faculty, and get this card stamped,

**Clerk:** and then you come back here with it and pay your union fee.

**Female Student:** Oh, thanks very much.

**Announcer:** The man and the woman meet up again.

**Announcer:** Look at questions 11 and 12, and circle the correct answer.

**Male Student:** Oh, there you are.

**Female Student:** Oh, thought you were never gonna come back.

**Male Student:** Ha, ha, sorry.

**Male Student:** The canteen was absolutely packed, I had to wait for ages.

**Male Student:** And then when I got to the front of the queue, they had hardly any food left.

**Male Student:** So I had to get you a slice of pizza.

**Male Student:** I'm Sorry.

**Female Student:** Oh, that's OK.

**Female Student:** I could eat anything.

**Female Student:** I'm so hungry.

**Male Student:** Oh, and there's your bottle of orange juice.

**Male Student:** And your apple.

**Male Student:** At least I managed that.

**Female Student:** Great, thanks a lot.

**Male Student:** Oh, and here's your $2 back.

**Female Student:** Don't worry about it.

**Female Student:** Buy me a cup of coffee later.

**Male Student:** Yeah, all right then.

**Male Student:** So, how did you go?

**Female Student:** Oh, well, in order to register, we've got to go to the law faculty and get this card stamped.

**Female Student:** And then go back to the admin building and pay the union fees.

**Female Student:** That means we're registered.

**Female Student:** Uh huh.

**Female Student:** After that we have to go to the notice board to find out about lectures, and then we have to put our names down for tutorial groups, and go to the library.

**Male Student:** Great.

**Male Student:** Well, first, let's sit down and have our lunch.

**Female Student:** Ha ha.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.
