## Why these answers are right

**1. shopping.** The notes list features of the places visited, and gap 1 follows the word good. After historical interest, the organizer adds that the places also offer a variety of shopping because students always ask about it, so shopping, or variety of shopping, fills the gap.

**2. guided tours.** Gap 2 is the third feature of the places on the trips. The organizer says the school picks places where it knows there are guided tours, because a tour gives the visit a good focus. Guided tours is two words, well inside the limit.

**3. more than 12.** The note says special trips are organized for groups of a certain size. The organizer offers to arrange special trips if there are more than 12 people, so the answer needs the words more than 12, not the number on its own.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 1, you'll hear a young student asking the social organizer of his school for information about organized trips.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4.

**Announcer:** You'll see that there is an example which has been done for you.

**Announcer:** On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.

**Man:** Good morning.

**Woman:** Good morning.

**Woman:** How can I help you?

**Man:** I understand that the school organizes... umm, trips to different...

**Woman:** Yes, we run 5 every month.

**Woman:** 3 during weekends and two Wednesday afternoon trips.

**Announcer:** There are five trips every month, so 5 has been written in the notes.

**Announcer:** Now we shall begin.

**Announcer:** You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.

**Announcer:** Listen carefully and answer questions 1 to 4.

**Man:** Good morning.

**Woman:** Good morning.

**Woman:** How can I help you?

**Man:** I understand that the school organizes... umm, trips to different...

**Woman:** Yes, we run 5 every month.

**Woman:** 3 during weekends and 2 Wednesday afternoon trips.

**Man:** What sort of places?

**Woman:** Well, obviously it varies, but always places of historical interest.

**Woman:** And also which offer a variety of shopping, because our students always ask about that.

**Woman:** And then we go for ones where we know there are guided tours, because this gives a good focus for the visit.

**Man:** Um. Do you travel far?

**Woman:** Well, we're lucky here obviously, because we're able to say that all our visits are less than 3 hours drive.

**Man:** How much do they cost?

**Woman:** Oh, again it varies.

**Woman:** Between 5 and 15 pounds a head, depending on the distance.

**Woman:** Uh huh. Oh, and we do offer to arrange special trips, if you know there are more than 12 people.

**Man:** Oh, right, I'll keep that in mind.

**Man:** And what are the times normally?

**Woman:** We try to keep it pretty fixed, so that that students get to know the pattern.

**Woman:** We leave at 8:30 am and return at 6:00 pm.

**Woman:** We figure it's best to keep the day fairly short.

**Man:** Oh, yes.

**Man:** And how do we reserve a place?

**Woman:** You sign your name on the notice board.

**Woman:** Do you know where it is?

**Man:** Uh huh. I saw it this morning.

**Woman:** And we do ask that you sign up 3 days in advance, so we know we've got enough people interested to run it, and we can cancel if necessary with full refund of course.

**Man:** That's fine, thanks.

**Announcer:** Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 5 to 10.

**Announcer:** Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.

**Man:** And what visits are planned for this term?

**Woman:** Right, well, I'm afraid the schedule hasn't been printed out yet, but we have confirmed the dates and planned the optional extra visits.

**Woman:** Which you can also book in advance if you want to.

**Man:** Oh, that's all right.

**Man:** If you can just give some idea of the weekend ones, so I can, you know, work out when to see friends, et cetera.

**Woman:** Oh sure.

**Woman:** Well, uh, the first one is Saint Ives.

**Woman:** That's on the 13th of February, and we'll have only 16 places available, uh, cause we're going by minibus.

**Woman:** And that's a day in town with the optional extra of visiting the Hepworth museum.

**Man:** All right, yeah, that sounds good.

**Woman:** Um. Then there's a London trip on the 16th of February.

**Woman:** And we'll be taking a medium sized coach, so there'll be 45 places on that.

**Woman:** And let's see the optional extra is the tower of London.

**Man:** Oh, I've already been there.

**Woman:** Yeah.

**Woman:** Uh. After that, there's Bristol on the 3rd of March.

**Man:** Where?

**Woman:** Bristol, BRISTOL.

**Man:** OK.

**Woman:** That's in a different minibus with 18 places available.

**Woman:** Oh, and the optional extra is a visit to the SS Great Britain.

**Man:** OK.

**Woman:** We're going to Salisbury on the 18th of March.

**Woman:** And that's always a popular one, because the optional extra is Stonehenge.

**Woman:** So we're taking the large coach with 50 seats.

**Man:** Oh, good.

**Woman:** And then the last one is to Bath on the 23rd of March.

**Man:** Oh yes, is Bath the Roman city?

**Woman:** Yes, that's right.

**Woman:** And that's in the 16 seater minibus.

**Man:** And where's the optional visit?

**Woman:** It's to the American Museum, well worth a visit.

**Man:** OK, well that's great.

**Man:** Um. Thanks for all that.

**Woman:** My pleasure.

**Woman:** Oh, by the way, if you want more information about any of the trips, have a look in the student newspaper.

**Man:** OK.

**Woman:** Or have a word with my assistant.

**Woman:** Her name is Jane Yentob.

**Woman:** That's YENTOB.

**Man:** All right, I've got that.

**Man:** Thank you very much for all your help.

**Woman:** You're very welcome.

**Woman:** I hope you enjoy the trips.

**Announcer:** That is the end of section 1.

**Announcer:** You now have half a minute to check your answers.
