## Why these answers are right

**11. A, C, E, G.** One correct activity is A. The welfare officer says many union events are fundraising activities for charities, which the union takes very seriously. Raising funds for charities is raising money for good causes. Political campaigning, B, is never mentioned at all.

**12. A, C, E, G.** Another correct activity is C. The union manages the students' union paper shop, selling magazines, newspapers, stationery and sweets. A shop that mainly sells newspapers and magazines is a newsagent's. It is never called a supermarket, so D is a distractor.

**13. A, C, E, G.** A third activity is E. Elizabeth describes a ticket shop with very good deals on coaches to London, charter flights, pop concerts and plays, adding that prices are as cheap as anywhere. Good deals on tickets mean providing cheap tickets.

## Transcript

**Announcer:** Section 2, you will hear a student welfare officer talking to a small group of students, just before the beginning of term.

**Announcer:** First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 16.

**Announcer:** Now listen carefully to the talk, and answer questions 11 to 16.

**Elizabeth:** Uh. OK, uh, well, good morning everybody.

**Elizabeth:** My name is Elizabeth Reed, and I'm your assistant welfare officer.

**Elizabeth:** Uh. What I'd like to do now is tell you a little more about some of the social facilities available on the campus, and also to tell you something about what the town has to offer.

**Elizabeth:** As you probably know already, the Student Union building is the main center of social life here, as indeed it is in most British universities.

**Elizabeth:** The union runs a weekly program of events for all tastes.

**Elizabeth:** Oh, everything from discos to talks by guest speakers.

**Elizabeth:** Many of these events are fundraising activities for charities, which the union takes very seriously.

**Elizabeth:** They manage the students' union paper shop, selling magazines and newspapers, as well as stationery, sweets, and so on.

**Elizabeth:** Um. Then uh, let me see, oh, there's the ticket shop, where you can get some very good deals on, well, for example, coaches to London, or inexpensive charter flights.

**Elizabeth:** As cheap as you'll get anywhere, people say, or tickets for big pop groups playing here, or at other venues all over the country, or plays in London.

**Elizabeth:** Oh.

**Elizabeth:** And we mustn't forget the Union Cafeteria and the big new diner.

**Elizabeth:** Er... yes? Did you have a question?

**Student:** Uh. Yeah, does the union also provide help with any problems?

**Student:** I mean advice on financial problems, for example.

**Student:** Or does the university provide that?

**Elizabeth:** Yes, the union runs their own advice service, offering help with financial matters, uh, such as grants.

**Elizabeth:** I'm sure you realize anything medical should be discussed with the University Medical Service, which also has an excellent counseling center.

**Elizabeth:** I think that was made clear yesterday.

**Elizabeth:** However, the union has its own officer who can give advice on legal problems.

**Announcer:** You now have some time to look at questions 17 to 20.

**Announcer:** Now listen to the rest of the talk, and answer questions 17 to 20.

**Elizabeth:** Now on to Radford.

**Elizabeth:** For a town of its size, Radford has some unusually good leisure and community facilities, and has quite a good shopping center with an interesting range of shops.

**Elizabeth:** As you go into Radford, there's a new, well, quite new, Olympic size swimming pool.

**Elizabeth:** Uh. That's on the outskirts at a place called Renton.

**Elizabeth:** Above the pool, there's a high tech fitness center.

**Elizabeth:** Are there any ice skaters here?

**Elizabeth:** No, oh pity, uh, the facilities for ice skating are excellent.

**Elizabeth:** Well, uh, the new Metro Tower right in the center of town has got an ice rink.

**Elizabeth:** And a sports hall for squash, badminton, volleyball, and several other indoor sports.

**Elizabeth:** And in the same building there's a new cinema with six screens.

**Elizabeth:** Uh. Then, let me see, um, in the main square, just two minutes' walk from the Metro Tower, there's the Theater Royal, which often gets London productions on tour...

**Elizabeth:** and in the streets nearby, you can find a good range of inexpensive restaurants, including Indian, Chinese, Thai, and...

**Announcer:** That is the end of Section 2.

**Announcer:** You will now have half a minute to check your answers.
