## The short answer

Form, note, table and flow-chart completion is the type you meet most often in IELTS Listening, and it works the same way in all four shapes: an outline of part of the recording appears on screen with gaps, and you type the missing words as you hear them. IELTS prints a word limit above the questions, and your answer has to stay inside it. Each gap is worth one mark out of 40, and spelling counts.

## How it's scored

IELTS describes this type as filling in the gaps in an outline of part or all of the listening text, with answers taken from the recording inside a stated word limit. The outline follows the recording in order, so the gaps arrive in the order you hear them.

Spelling is part of the answer. A word you heard correctly and typed wrongly scores nothing, which makes this type as much a spelling test as a listening one for most candidates. Numbers, dates and spelled-out names are where marks go most often.

> Read the gaps before the audio starts and decide what kind of word each one needs: a number, a name, a noun, a time. Knowing the shape of the answer is most of the work.

**Example 1 -- a booking form**

Why it scores: The gaps arrive in the order you hear them, and each one has a shape you could predict from the form: a name, a number of nights, a room type, an amount.

**Example 2 -- numbers and a spelled-out name**

Prompt: Play it once and complete the notes.

Why it scores: When a name is spelled out, the spelling is the answer: write the letters as you hear them rather than the name you expected. "Double nine" means two nines, and a quarter past four is 4.15, which the form already shows.

**Example 3 -- the answer that arrives after a correction**

Recording (played once), transcript:

Prompt: Play it once. Careful: the speaker corrects herself.

- Blank 1: B20

Why it scores: Self-corrections are deliberate. The answer is always what the speaker settles on. "Sorry", "actually" and "I mean" are the signals that the number you just wrote is about to be replaced.

## Common mistakes

| What costs marks | Do this instead |
| --- | --- |
| Writing more words than the limit allows. | Check the limit printed above the questions before the audio starts, and fit your answer inside it. |
| Waiting for the recording to finish before typing. | Type as you hear. The recording plays once, and reconstructing four answers from memory afterwards is how sets get lost. |
| Keeping the first number after a correction. | Listen past sorry, actually and I mean. The answer is what the speaker settles on. |
| Leaving a gap blank because you are unsure of the spelling. | Write your best attempt. A blank scores nothing, and an attempt is sometimes right. |

## How to practice

1. Practice numbers on their own: phone numbers, prices, dates and room numbers, until double, oh and a quarter past stop slowing you down.
2. Do a set where you type every answer during the audio, then use the time afterwards only for spelling.
3. Keep a list of the words you misspell. For most people it is a short and very repetitive list.
4. Predict the word class for each gap before you play anything, then check how often the prediction was right.

## Common questions

### Does spelling count in IELTS Listening?

Yes. An answer has to be spelled correctly to earn its mark, which is why spelled-out names and numbers are worth practicing on their own.

### How many words can I write?

As many as the limit printed above the questions allows, and no more. The instruction is on the paper for every set, so read it before the recording starts.

### Do the answers come in the order of the recording?

Yes. The outline follows the recording, so once you have found your place the gaps arrive in order.
