# IELTS Reading multiple choice: four options, and the answers come in order

IELTS Reading multiple choice gives four options, or a sentence with four endings, and the questions follow the text. Three worked items with a passage and the traps that cost marks.

## The short answer

Reading multiple choice gives you a question with four possible answers, or half a sentence with four possible endings. You choose the one correct answer. Sometimes a longer list asks you to choose more than one, and the instruction says how many. The questions are in the same order as the information in the text. Each correct answer is one mark out of 40, in both Academic and General Training.

## Key facts

- **Paper:** Reading
- **Module:** Academic and General Training
- **Options:** 4, or a longer list when you choose more than one
- **Order:** Questions follow the order of the text
- **Marks:** 1 per question, out of 40
- **Penalty for a wrong answer:** None

Formats, timings and marking come from IELTS's own test-format pages, checked 27 September 2026.

## How it's scored

IELTS says this type tests many reading skills: a detailed understanding of specific points, or a general understanding of the main points of the text. Expect both kinds in one set.

The questions follow the text, so the answer to question 2 comes after the answer to question 1. Use that: once you find an answer, the next one is further down.

> Three of the four options are wrong for a reason you can name: not in the text, the opposite of the text, or true but not what the question asks. Name the reason for each one before you commit.

## Reading multiple choice examples

Worked examples written for this page. Answer each one before you open the model response: memorizing a response is scored as an irrelevant answer in the real test.

**Example 1 -- a detail**

> Seed libraries lend seeds rather than books. A gardener borrows a packet in spring, grows the plants, and returns seeds from the harvest in autumn. The first ones in North America opened in the early 2000s, and there are now several hundred, most of them inside public libraries. Supporters say the main benefit is not free seeds but local adaptation: seeds saved in the same town for several years produce plants suited to its soil and climate. Critics point out that many borrowers never return anything, so the collections depend on a small group of experienced gardeners.

Prompt: How does a seed library work?

- A. Gardeners buy seeds cheaply from public libraries.
- B. Gardeners borrow seeds and return seeds from their harvest.
- C. Gardeners swap gardening books for seeds.
- D. Experienced gardeners grow seeds for the library to sell.
Answer: B.

Model response: B. The second sentence describes the cycle: borrow in spring, grow, return seeds from the harvest.

Why it scores: A and D add money, which the text never mentions. C takes the word "books" from the first sentence, where the text says seed libraries lend seeds rather than books.

**Example 2 -- the main point**

> Seed libraries lend seeds rather than books. A gardener borrows a packet in spring, grows the plants, and returns seeds from the harvest in autumn. The first ones in North America opened in the early 2000s, and there are now several hundred, most of them inside public libraries. Supporters say the main benefit is not free seeds but local adaptation: seeds saved in the same town for several years produce plants suited to its soil and climate. Critics point out that many borrowers never return anything, so the collections depend on a small group of experienced gardeners.

Prompt: According to supporters, what is the main benefit of seed libraries?

- A. The seeds are free to borrow.
- B. They are found inside public libraries.
- C. The seeds become suited to local conditions.
- D. They attract experienced gardeners.
Answer: C.

Model response: C. Supporters say the main benefit is local adaptation: plants suited to the town's soil and climate.

Why it scores: Free seeds is in the text, and the text says it is not the main benefit. The same sentence that rejects A gives you C.

**Example 3 -- a sentence ending**

> Seed libraries lend seeds rather than books. A gardener borrows a packet in spring, grows the plants, and returns seeds from the harvest in autumn. The first ones in North America opened in the early 2000s, and there are now several hundred, most of them inside public libraries. Supporters say the main benefit is not free seeds but local adaptation: seeds saved in the same town for several years produce plants suited to its soil and climate. Critics point out that many borrowers never return anything, so the collections depend on a small group of experienced gardeners.

Prompt: Complete the sentence: critics say that seed libraries...

- A. have grown too quickly since the early 2000s.
- B. rely on a few people to keep their collections going.
- C. should not be run by public libraries.
- D. lend seeds that are poorly suited to local soil.
Answer: B.

Model response: B. Many borrowers return nothing, so the collections depend on a small group of experienced gardeners.

Why it scores: The answer is the last sentence, which fits the rule that questions follow the text. A and C use facts from the passage but attach them to a criticism nobody makes.

## Common mistakes

| What costs marks | Do this instead |
| --- | --- |
| Choosing an option because its words are in the text. | Check what the text says about those words. Distractors reuse the passage's vocabulary. |
| Picking a true statement that does not answer the question. | Reread the question after choosing. True in the text is not enough; it has to answer this question. |
| Searching the whole passage for each question. | Start where the previous answer was. The questions follow the text. |
| Choosing one answer when the instruction asks for two. | Read the instruction for how many answers you need before you read the options. |

**Know what the marks are worth** Reading and Listening are 40 marks each. The band calculator turns a mark out of 40 into a band, and four skill bands into your overall. [Open the IELTS band calculator](/ielts/band-score-calculator)

## How to practice

1. For every wrong option in a set, write the reason in three words: not stated, opposite, or wrong question.
2. Do a set untimed, then again at 90 seconds per question including reading.
3. Answer from the question alone first, in your own words, then find the option closest to what you wrote.

## Common questions

### How many options are there in IELTS Reading multiple choice?

Four when you choose one answer. Sometimes there is a longer list and you choose more than one, and the question says how many.

### Do Reading multiple-choice questions follow the text?

Yes. IELTS says the questions are in the same order as the information in the text, so the answer to the first question comes before the answer to the second.

### Is multiple choice in General Training Reading too?

Yes. IELTS names it on both the Academic and the General Training Reading format pages.
