## Answer key

| Q | Answer | Proof |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 27 | D | The idea is modelled on historic volcanic explosions, such as that of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 |
| 28 | B | Geo-engineering has been shown to work, at least on a small localised scale. ... May Day parades in Moscow have taken place under clear blue skies |
| 29 | A | a term which generally refers to the intentional large-scale manipulation of the environment. |
| 30 | sunshade | to form a transparent, sunlight-refracting sunshade in an orbit 1.5 million km above the Earth. |
| 31 | iron | depositing iron in the ocean |
| 32 | algae | to stimulate the growth of algae |
| 33 | clouds | This would involve using sulphur or hydrogen sulphide aerosols so that sulphur dioxide would form clouds |
| 34 | cables | preserve the ice sheets of Greenland with reinforced high-tension cables, preventing icebergs from moving into the sea. |
| 35 | snow | birches would shed their leaves in winter, thus enabling radiation to be reflected by the snow. |
| 36 | rivers | Re-routing Russian rivers to increase cold water flow to ice-forming areas |
| 37 | B | then the planet would return to its pre-engineered condition very rapidly, and probably within ten to twenty years. |
| 38 | D | we shouldn't exclude thinking thoroughly about this topic and its possibilities. |
| 39 | C | Lunt says Angel's project would have to operate at half strength |
| 40 | A | no substitute for developing renewable energy: the only permanent solution |

## Why these answers are right

**27. D.** The question wants a project based on an earlier natural event. Paragraph D says the aerosol idea is modelled on historic volcanic explosions, such as Mount Pinatubo in 1991, which briefly cooled the planet. A volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon, so D.

**28. B.** Paragraph B says geo-engineering has been shown to work on a small local scale and gives the example of Moscow's May Day parades, held under clear skies after aircraft dispersed the clouds. That is a successful use, so the answer is B.

**29. A.** The question asks for a common definition. Paragraph A introduces geo-engineering as a term which generally refers to the intentional large-scale manipulation of the environment. Generally refers to signals the usual meaning, so the definition is in paragraph A.
