## Answer key

| Q | Answer | Proof |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 27 | E | Sceptics and advocates alike do concur on one issue, however: that the most impressive evidence so far has come from the so-called 'ganzfeld' experiments |
| 28 | B | such signals might be more easily detected by those experiencing meditation-like tranquillity in a relaxing 'whole field' of light, sound and warmth |
| 29 | A | Answering such questions would transform parapsychology. ... The problem stems at least in part from the lack of any plausible mechanism for telepathy. |
| 30 | F | researchers trying to identify people who are particularly successful in autoganzfeld trials ... creative and artistic people do much better than average |
| 31 | sender | a person acting as a 'sender' would attempt to beam the image |
| 32 | picture | identification of a picture chosen from a random selection of four |
| 33 | receiver | beam the image over to the 'receiver' relaxing in the sealed room |
| 34 | sensory leakage | These ranged from 'sensory leakage' |
| 35 | fraud | to outright fraud |
| 36 | computers | used computers to perform many of the key tasks |
| 37 | human involvement | By minimising human involvement, the idea was to minimise the risk of flawed results. |
| 38 | meta-analysis | results from hundreds of autoganzfeld tests were studied by Honorton in a 'meta-analysis' |
| 39 | lack of consistency | remain disturbed by the lack of consistency between individual ganzfeld studies |
| 40 | big enough | the group is just not big enough. |

## Why these answers are right

**27. E.** The sentence starts with researchers who hold differing attitudes. Paragraph B says skeptics and advocates alike concur that the most impressive evidence so far has come from the ganzfeld experiments. Concur means agree, and most impressive evidence shows their significance, so the ending is E.

**28. B.** The sentence asks what meditation reports suggested. Paragraph B says these reports made researchers think telepathic signals are faint and might be easier to detect in meditation-like calm within a relaxing whole field of light, sound and warmth. That points to creating a suitable environment, ending B.

**29. A.** The sentence asks what would drastically change attitudes. Paragraph G blames rejection by scientists on the lack of a plausible mechanism, and paragraph I says that learning whether entanglement exists in human minds would transform parapsychology. Transform matches alter drastically, so the ending is A.
