## Why these answers are right

**1. mining.** Paragraph A says David Davies made his fortune in the shipping and mining industries. The notes already turn shipping into transportation businesses, so the one remaining source of wealth for the gap is mining.

**2. education.** Paragraph B says the sisters' education was rigorously geared toward pursuits such as art collecting. Designed to give them an interest in activities like collecting art paraphrases geared toward such pursuits, so the single word needed is education.

**3. notes.** Paragraph B describes the sisters visiting galleries with their governess and making extensive notes on the collections there. Lengthy in the notes matches extensive, and the gap needs a plural noun after took, so the answer is notes.
