## Answer key

| Q | Answer | Proof |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 14 | NOT GIVEN | United Nations projections anticipate it will become a megacity within seven years |
| 15 | FALSE | four out of five of its people live in single-storey informal settlements on the spreading edges of the city |
| 16 | NOT GIVEN | A single suburban rail line serves residents in a few areas to the south |
| 17 | TRUE | nearly all takes place informally without any agreed strategy |
| 18 | FALSE | Unlike many cities on the continent, Dar es Salaam isn't trying to build a metro |
| 19 | lanes | The DART bus rapid transit (BRT) system runs on bus lanes separated from other traffic |
| 20 | boarding | Ticket purchase and control takes place at stations prior to boarding and the buses are step-free |
| 21 | wheelchairs | which means the entire route is accessible to people using wheelchairs or who are travelling with baby buggies. |
| 22 | fuel | complaining that drivers often refuse to turn on the air conditioning to save fuel. |
| 23 | flood | A shortage of buses after a serious flood at the main depot during the rainy season means the system is carrying 200,000 people a day |
| 24 | smartcards | Smartcards can't be used as the mechanical readers aren't working either |
| 25 | gates | Staff stand by the gates and tear tickets as people enter. |
| 26 | queues | queues are considerable at peak times. |

## Why these answers are right

**14. NOT GIVEN.** Paragraph A gives several forecasts for Dar es Salaam's growth, from the United Nations and the Global Cities Institute, but never compares the actual growth with earlier predictions. Whether it is rising faster than previously expected is not stated, so NOT GIVEN.

**15. FALSE.** Paragraph B says four out of five residents live in single-storey informal settlements on the edges of the city. Four out of five confirms most, and the edge location matches, but single-storey contradicts high-rise blocks, so the statement is FALSE.

**16. NOT GIVEN.** Paragraph C says a single suburban rail line serves a few areas in the south and is tiny compared with the whole city. The passage says nothing about asking residents their opinions of it, so there is no information and the answer is NOT GIVEN.
