## Band 7 sample

Well, the part of my daily routine I enjoy most is my early morning walk, which I do before anyone else in my flat wakes up.

I normally get up at around six, make a coffee in a travel mug and then walk along the river near my building for about forty minutes. I've been doing this for nearly two years now. Actually, it started in my final year at university, when I was really stressed about exams and a friend told me that walking could help me to clear my head. At first I only went once or twice a week, but then I noticed I was sleeping better and feeling more focused, so I turned it into a daily habit.

Most of the time I go alone, and to be honest that's part of the appeal. I don't listen to music or podcasts, I just look around and let my mind wander. I see the same faces every day, like an old man who feed the ducks and a couple of runners, so we always nod to each other, which is quite nice.

The main reason I enjoy it is that it gives me some time for myself before the day gets busy. Once I start work, my phone rings constantly and I have hardly any chance to think. The walk is also good for my health, because I spend most of the day sitting at a desk. And also it puts me in a good mood, so I'm more patient with people at work. Even on rainy days I try to go out, although I'll admit I sometimes make excuse and stay in bed.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer speaks at length with a clear structure: the routine, how it began, what happens on the walk and why it matters. Phrases such as "clear my head", "part of the appeal" and "let my mind wander" show some less common vocabulary used appropriately. Linking leans heavily on "so", and there are typical slips: "an old man who feed the ducks" (rather than "feeds") and "make excuse" (rather than "make an excuse"). Band 8 would add more precise and idiomatic language, more varied linking and a more vivid picture of the experience itself.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
