## Band 7 sample

I'm going to talk about my aunt Rosa, who's my mother's younger sister. She's in her late forties and she works as a primary school headteacher. I've known her all my life, obviously, but we've become closer in the last few years because she moved to our city, and now she comes to our house for dinner almost every weekends.

What's interesting about her style is that it's not expensive or fashionable in the usual sense. She usually wears quite simple clothes, like plain trousers, a shirt or a knitted jumper, but the colours always match perfectly. She likes warm colours, like dark green, mustard and brown, and she often adds one small thing that stands out, for example a colourful scarf or some unusual earrings she picked up in a market somewhere. And her clothes always fit to her well, which I think is more important than the brand.

So why do I think she dresses well? First of all, her clothes really suit her personality. She's a warm, creative person, and you can kind of see that in what she wears. Secondly, she always looks appropriate for the situation. At school she looks professional but still friendly, so the children aren't scared of her, and at weekends she's more relaxed but still neat. And thirdly, she never follows trends just because everyone else does. She told me once that she buys less clothes but better quality, and she keeps them for years.

To be honest, she's made me think about my own wardrobe. I used to buy lots of cheap things that I only wore once or twice, but now I'm trying to be more like her and choose more carefully.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer is well developed and covers all four points with relevant detail, such as the colourful scarf and the contrast between school and weekends. Vocabulary like "stands out", "suit her personality" and "wardrobe" is used appropriately. The reasons are signposted with a rather mechanical "First of all", "Secondly", "And thirdly", and a few typical errors remain: "less clothes" (rather than "fewer clothes"), "almost every weekends" (rather than "every weekend") and "fit to her well" (rather than "fit her well"). For Band 8, the speaker would weave the reasons together more naturally and use more precise, idiomatic expressions about style.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
