## Band 7 sample

I'd really like to take a motorbike trip through the mountains in the north of my country. I've been thinking about it for a few years, but I haven't had the chance to do it yet.

The plan is to start from my city and ride up into the hills, staying in a different small town every night. The whole trip would take maybe ten days. I've seen photos from people who did a similar route, and the roads go through pine forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and over some quite high passes. Some sections are not paved, so it would be quite challenging.

I'd go by motorbike because I think it gives you more freedom than a car. You can stop wherever you want, and you really feel the wind and smell the forest. At the moment I only have a small scooter, so I'd probably rent a stronger bike that's suitable for mountain roads.

I'd like to go with two of my close friends from college. One of them is very experienced with motorbikes and he even knows how to fix them, which would be very useful if we break down in the middle of nowhere. The other friend is a great photographer, so we'd come back with amazing pictures.

There are several reasons I want to do this trip. Firstly, I love adventure, and I think it would be an unforgettable experience. Secondly, I want to see parts of my own country that most people never visit. A lot of people go to abroad for holidays, but I feel I don't really know my own country well enough. And finally, I think it would be a good way to make our friendship even more stronger before we all get busy with jobs and families.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer covers every bullet with relevant detail and keeps going without strain. Vocabulary is good ("high passes", "not paved", "break down in the middle of nowhere", "unforgettable"), and hypothetical "would" is used consistently. There are two clear errors, the double comparative "even more stronger" (rather than "even stronger") and "go to abroad" (rather than "go abroad"), and the reasons are presented with mechanical markers ("Firstly", "Secondly", "And finally"). For Band 8, the speaker would need more precise and idiomatic language to bring the trip to life, and more flexible ways of linking ideas.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
