## Band 7 sample

The TV show I'd like to talk about is Planet Earth II, which is a nature documentary series made by the BBC and narrated by David Attenborough.

It's about wildlife in different habitats around the world, and each episode focuses on one type of environment, for example islands, mountains, jungles, deserts and even cities. The camera work is incredible. They use drones and special cameras, so you can see animals up close in a way that you could never see them in real life. The most famous scene, I think, is on an island in the Galápagos, where a baby iguana is running away from a whole group of snakes. I watched it with my heart in my mouth, because it was like an action film.

I first watched it a few years ago on a streaming service, and since then I've watched some episodes again and again. Usually I watch it on a Sunday evening when I want to relax, and sometimes I watch it with my younger brother, who is ten years and absolutely loves animals. We close the lights and watch it on the big TV in the living room, so it feels a bit like the cinema.

I enjoy it for a few reasons. Firstly, it's very relaxing and beautiful to watch, especially the music and the landscapes. Secondly, I always learn something new about animals. And also, it makes me think more about the environment, because some episodes show how humans are damaging these habitats. After watching it, I started to be more careful about wasting plastic. So for me, it's both entertaining and educational at the same time.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer gives a clear description of the series with a memorable example scene. Vocabulary is good and appropriate ("habitats", "narrated by", "up close", "with my heart in my mouth"), though the reasons are listed with "Firstly", "Secondly" and "And also", which sounds slightly mechanical. The answer is largely accurate, with a few typical slips: "We close the lights" (rather than "turn off the lights") and "who is ten years" (rather than "ten" or "ten years old"). Band 8 would offer more precise and idiomatic evaluation, a more natural flow between ideas and a wider range of complex structures.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
