## Band 7 sample

The website I visit most often is probably Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. I think almost everyone knows it, but I use it so much that it's become part of my daily routine.

I can't remember exactly when I found it, but I think it was in primary school, when I had to do a project about volcanoes. I typed the question into a search engine and the first result was a Wikipedia page. Since then, I use it almost every day. What I didn't know at that time is that the articles are written and edited by volunteers, not by professional writers, which I find quite surprising even now.

I use it for lots of different things. For my studies, I often read the article first to get a general idea about a topic, and then I look at the references at the bottom to find more reliable sources. Outside of studying, I use it whenever I'm curious about something, for example, if I watch a historical film, I usually check afterwards what was really happened. Sometimes I start reading about one topic and then click on links for an hour and end up reading about something completely different.

There are a few reasons why I visit it so often. First, it's free and there are no advertisements, which is quite rare nowadays. Second, it covers almost any topic you can imagine, and it's available in many languages, including my own. And finally, it's very quick. However, I know that I shouldn't trust everything on it, because anyone can edit it, so for serious work I always check the information in other places too.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer is relevant and well organised, with useful detail about how the speaker uses the site and an awareness of its limits. Vocabulary is good ("references", "reliable sources", "edited by volunteers"), and complex sentences are mostly accurate. There are two typical errors: the present simple after "since" in "Since then, I use it almost every day" (rather than "I've used") and the wrong passive form "what was really happened" (rather than "what really happened"). The reasons are listed with "First", "Second" and "And finally". For Band 8, the speaker would need more idiomatic language and smoother, more flexible linking.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
