## Band 7 sample

The advertisement I remember best is a TV advert for a brand of instant noodles that was on television when I was about eight or nine years old. I won't say the name of the brand, but in my country almost everyone of my age would know it immediately.

I used to see it every evening, because it was always shown during the cartoons after school. Sometimes it was on two or three times in one hour, so it was impossible to miss it.

The advert itself was very simple. It showed a boy coming home from football practice in the rain, completely wet and tired. His grandmother is in the kitchen and she quickly makes him a bowl of noodles. Then the boy sits down, eats the noodles and suddenly he's full of energy again, and he runs back outside to play. At the end there was a really catchy song, only about five seconds long, with the name of the brand.

I think I remember it for two reasons. The first is the song. Me and my classmates used to sing it all the time, in the playground and on the bus, and even now, if I hear the first few notes, I can sing the whole thing. It's a bit embarrassed, actually. The second reason is the feeling of the advert. It was very warm and family-oriented, and it reminded me of my own grandmother, who used to look after me after school.

Looking back now, I realise it was quite clever marketing, because it connected the product with comfort and family. And to be honest, it worked, because I always asked my mum to buy those noodles.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer describes the advert clearly and gives two sensible reasons for remembering it, ending with a thoughtful comment on marketing. Vocabulary is appropriate ("catchy song", "family-oriented", "clever marketing"), though the structure "The first is... The second reason is..." is a little mechanical. Grammar is generally good, but the narration slips between past and present ("It showed a boy... His grandmother is in the kitchen"), there is a word-form error in "It's a bit embarrassed" (rather than "embarrassing"), and "Me and my classmates" is informal. Band 8 would control tense consistently and use more precise, idiomatic language.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
