## Band 7 sample

I'm going to talk about my cousin Anjali, who is a fitness instructor and, honestly, one of the most energetic people I know.

She's my mother's sister's daughter, and she's about four years older than me. We grew up in the same town, so we spent a lot of time together when we were kids, and even now we meet up quite often because she lives just twenty minutes away from me.

Her job is teaching group exercise classes at a gym, things like dance workouts and circuit training. On a typical day she teaches three or four classes, and in between she also trains a few private clients. Apart from that, she runs on weekends and she's also learning to play the guitar, which she has started last year. I really don't know how she finds the time for everything.

The reason I think she's so energetic is not only because she's physically active, but also because of her attitude. She's always enthusiastic about trying new things and she never seems to get tired or bored. For example, last month we went to a wedding together, and after a long day she was still the first one on the dance floor at midnight, while the rest of us were sitting down and complaining about our feet. She also has a very positive way of talking, so everyone around her start to feel more motivated. Sometimes it's a bit too much for me, to be honest, especially early in the morning, but mostly I find her really inspiring and I wish I had even half of her energy.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer speaks at length about a clear subject and supports the final bullet with a good example from the wedding. Vocabulary is appropriate with some less common items ("circuit training", "enthusiastic", "motivated"), though her personality is described in fairly general terms. There are a few typical errors: the present perfect with a finished time in "which she has started last year" (rather than "which she started last year"), the agreement slip "everyone around her start" (rather than "starts"), and the redundant "because" in "The reason... is not only because". For Band 8, the speaker would need more idiomatic and precise language and greater flexibility in how the ideas are connected.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
