## Band 7 sample

The object I find really beautiful is a hand-woven rug that hangs on the wall in my parents' living room.

It was made by my grandmother when she was a young woman, so it's probably more than sixty years old now. She lived in a small mountain village, and in those days a lot of women there made rugs from sheep's wool during the winter, when there wasn't much farm work to do. When she moved to the city to live with us, she brought it with her, and after she passed away my mother decided to hang it on the wall instead of put it on the floor, to protect it.

It's about two metres long and one metre wide. The background is a deep red colour, and there are geometric patterns in dark blue, cream and a kind of golden yellow. In the middle there is a large diamond shape, and around the edges there are small symbols which, according to my mother, represent things like water and mountains. The colours have faded a little over the years, but I think that actually makes it to look softer and warmer.

I find it beautiful for a few reasons. First, the patterns are really detailed and perfectly balanced, and it's amazing that she did it all by hand without any modern tools. Second, it has a lot of sentimental value for me, because every time I look at it I think about my grandmother sitting by the fire. And finally, I like that it connects our modern apartment with the village life that my family come from.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer gives a full description with a clear structure, especially in the closing "First... Second... And finally" section. Vocabulary is good, including "geometric patterns", "faded" and "sentimental value", though verb forms slip twice: "instead of put it" (rather than "instead of putting it") and "makes it to look softer" (rather than "makes it look softer"). The listing of reasons also feels a little mechanical, and "really" is repeated. Band 8 would add more precise, evocative description, idiomatic expressions and a more natural, less formulaic way of linking reasons.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
