## Band 7 sample

The piece of clothing I wear most often is a blue denim jacket. It's quite a simple jacket, a little bit faded now, with two pockets on the front and metal buttons.

I got it as a present from my older sister about four years ago, when I started university. She bought it in a second-hand shop, and actually at first I wasn't sure about it, because I thought it looked a bit old-fashion. But she told me denim jackets never go out of style, and I have to admit she was right.

I wear it almost all the time, except in the middle of summer when it's too hot and in winter when I need something warmer. So mainly in spring and autumn, which in my city is quite a long period. I wear it to university, when I go out with friends, and sometimes even when I travel, because it has a pocket inside where I can keep my passport safely.

There are a few reasons why I wear it so often. Firstly, it's really practical. It goes with nearly everything, like jeans, trousers, even a dress, so I don't need to think too much in the morning. Secondly, it's very durable. I've washed it many, many times and it still looks fine, in fact I think it looks better now than when it was new. And thirdly, it has sentimental value. My sister has moved abroad two years ago, so when I wear it I kind of feel like she's still near me.

I think I'll keep it for a long time, maybe until it really falls apart. Even then I probably won't throw it away.

**Examiner notes.** This Band 7 answer is clear and complete, with a personal link (the sister abroad) that gives the talk some depth. Useful collocations appear ("never go out of style", "goes with nearly everything", "sentimental value"), but the reasons follow a rigid "Firstly... Secondly... And thirdly" pattern, and there are typical slips: a word-form error in "a bit old-fashion" (rather than "old-fashioned") and the present perfect with a finished time in "My sister has moved abroad two years ago" (rather than "moved"). Band 8 would replace the list with more natural development, use more precise and idiomatic descriptions of the item, and keep errors rare.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
