What is your favourite food?

## Band 6 sample

My favourite food is momo. It is a kind of dumpling, inside there is meat or vegetable and we eat it with spicy tomato sauce. In my city you can find momo in almost every restaurant and it is not expensive, so I eat it maybe two or three times in a week. I like it because the taste is very delicious and it is good for eating with friends. Last weekend I tried to make momo at home with my sister, but it was very hard to fold them properly and some of them was broken. But still, it tasted quite good, I think.

**Examiner notes.** This answer explains what the dish is, how often the speaker eats it and why, and adds a short story about cooking it, so it is well developed for Part 1. Linking is basic and sometimes run-on ("It is a kind of dumpling, inside there is meat"). Phrases like "the taste is very delicious" are repetitive, and there are slips in "times in a week" and "some of them was broken". For Band 7, the speaker would use precise food words such as "filling" or "steamed" and control agreement and sentence boundaries.

## Band 7 sample

It has to be ramen, the Japanese noodle soup. I only tried proper ramen for the first time a couple of years ago, when a small place opened near my office, and I've been hooked ever since. What I love is how much depth there is in the broth; some places simmer it for over twelve hours, and you can really taste the difference. It's also incredibly comforting on a cold evening. I've tried making it at home a few times, but to be honest it never quite lives up to the restaurant version, so these days I just treat myself once a week instead. It's become a bit of a Friday ritual.

**Examiner notes.** This answer is well organized: it names the food, explains how the speaker discovered it, gives a specific reason ("how much depth there is in the broth"), and ends with a personal habit. Phrases such as "I've been hooked ever since" and "never quite lives up to" sound natural. The present perfect is handled accurately. A few descriptions stay fairly common, such as "incredibly comforting". For Band 8, the speaker would use more exact, less predictable descriptions and connect the food to a deeper personal meaning.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
