## Band 6 sample

At the moment I live in a flat in the city centre with my two friends. We are all students in the same college, so we decided to share the rent because living alone is too expensive. The flat is on the fourth floor and it has three small bedrooms and one kitchen. I like it because it is very near to my college, I can walk there in ten minutes. But the problem is the area is quite noisy, especially in the night, because there is many shops and restaurants near. Maybe next year I will move to more quiet place.

**Examiner notes.** This answer covers where, who with, why and what the flat is like, so the examiner gets a full picture. Ideas are linked with simple connectors ("so", "because", "But"), and the second half joins clauses with a comma where a new sentence is needed. Errors such as "very near to", "in the night", "there is many shops" and "more quiet place" are noticeable but meaning stays clear. For Band 7, the speaker would use words like "conveniently located" and control comparatives and agreement.

## Band 7 sample

I'm living in a rented flat on the outskirts of the city, about forty minutes from where I work. I moved there last year, mainly because the rent is far more reasonable than in the centre and I wanted a bit more space. It's a fairly new building, so everything works properly, and there's a small park right across the road where I go jogging. The only real downside is the commute, which can be exhausting when the traffic's bad. Still, I think the trade-off is worth it, because it's much quieter and I actually sleep properly for the first time in years.

**Examiner notes.** This answer explains the location, the reasons for moving and a balanced view of advantages and disadvantages. Expressions such as "on the outskirts of the city", "The only real downside" and "the trade-off is worth it" are natural and well chosen. Grammar is accurate, with relative clauses and comparatives used confidently. The structure is a fairly familiar pros-then-cons pattern. For Band 8, the speaker would show more flexible, personal development and more precise, less common vocabulary.

## Common questions

### How long should an IELTS Speaking Part 2 answer be?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes; the examiner stops you at two. Aim to keep talking for the full time, which is usually 220 to 300 words.

### Can I use these sample answers in my test?

No. Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and a learned script is marked down. Use the samples to see what each band does, then answer in your own words.
