Listening: Multiple Choice, Single Answer #8 - Level 3 - Feeds Listening

> Listen to the recording and answer the question by choosing one option. Only one answer is correct.

Why does the speaker talk about Aboriginal or Indigenous Australians?

- Because he wants to explain studies about life expectancy.
- Because he wants to show the link between socioeconomic status, health and crime.
- Because he wants to explain the difference between Aboriginal men and women.
- Because he wants to explain that diabetes is a very serious problem.

## Answer

Because he wants to show the link between socioeconomic status, health and crime.

## Explanation

The speaker uses this group to demonstrate how interconnected factors like economic conditions and social environment directly impact physical well-being and legal outcomes.

What to watch: The first sentence gives the purpose: "The link between deprivation of social conditions, ill health and crime is all too obvious in Australia." The statistics that follow are examples. The diabetes option is tempting, but diabetes is only one example.

## Hints

- Listen for the broader context surrounding the mention of this group, rather than focusing on specific numbers.
- Consider whether the speaker is presenting a simple fact or using an example to support a complex argument about societal structures.

## Transcript

The link between deprivation of social conditions, ill health and crime is all too obvious in Australia. The life expectancy gap between the indigenous and non-indigenous populations of Australia is about 11 years. It had been said to be 17 years, whether it's actually got smaller or it's a change in the calculation method. Either way, it's enormous. Australian Aboriginal men are six times more likely, and Aboriginal women 11 times more likely to die of ischemic heart disease than non-Indigenous men and women. For diabetes, the differences are more alarming. The diabetes death rate is 19 times higher in Aboriginal men and 27 times higher in Aboriginal women than in the non-Indigenous population.
