China's biggest online search company, Baidu, said its self-driving car technologies would be available to others. In a bid to advance autonomous vehicles and perhaps to become an industry-standard in the same way that Google's Android operating system is for smartphones, Baidu's Apollo project will distribute technologies to developers and carmakers, initially for use in restricted environments as soon as July.

## Explanation

A strong response accurately captures the core message: a major technology firm is opening its autonomous driving platform to external developers to accelerate industry adoption and establish a common standard.

## Hints

- Focus on the main actor and their primary objective regarding the new software initiative.
- Consider why a company would share proprietary technology with competitors and developers.
