European wildcats, thought to be extinct 50 or so years ago in the Jura mountains, have since recolonized part of their former territory. This resurgence in an area occupied by domestic cats has gone hand in hand with genetic crosses between the two species. A team of biologists modeled the interactions between the two species to predict that hybridization would entail the irreversible genetic replacement of wildcats.

## Explanation

Pause at the commas around the phrase "thought to be extinct 50 or so years ago in the Jura mountains" to keep it separate. Say "Jura" as JOOR-uh and "50" as fifty. Stress "recolonized," "resurgence," and "hybridization," which have many syllables. Read "the irreversible genetic replacement of wildcats" as one group at the end.

## Hints

- Focus on the natural pauses at commas and periods to manage your breath and maintain a natural rhythm.
- Practice the pronunciation of complex biological terms before starting your recording to avoid hesitation.
