To understand how many inhabitants of a country are poor, it is not enough to know a country's per capita ____ .The number of poor people in a country and the ____ quality of life depend on how equally or unequally income is ____ across the population. In Brazil and Hungary, for ____ ,per capita income levels are quite comparable, but the ____ of poverty in Brazil is much higher.

## Answer

To understand how many inhabitants of a country are poor, it is not enough to know a country's per capita **income** .The number of poor people in a country and the **average** quality of life depend on how equally or unequally income is **distributed** across the population. In Brazil and Hungary, for **example** ,per capita income levels are quite comparable, but the **incidence** of poverty in Brazil is much higher.

## Explanation

Blank 5 follows "the ___ of poverty," and "incidence" means how often poverty occurs. This fits the claim that Brazil has more poor people. "Effects" changes the meaning to results of poverty. Blank 3 is a passive verb after "income is," so "distributed across the population" fits. "Lessened" ignores the clue "equally or unequally."

## Hints

- Look for nouns that describe financial measurements and verbs that describe how resources are spread among people.
- Consider the relationship between national wealth and the way it is shared across different social groups.
