> Read the text and answer the question by choosing one option. Only one answer is correct.

If there is an objective truth about what is morally right and wrong, why is there so much disagreement about such matters? Many believe that objective truths of any kind must be such as to garner consensus about them, at least among people who are well situated to appreciate such things. But it doesn't take an expert to realize that such consensus is extremely elusive in ethics. So persistent moral disagreement presents us with a choice. Perhaps there are no moral facts at all. Or there are, but ones that are not objective. Either way, the moral realist loses.

Why is there no objective truth about what is morally right and wrong?

- Because we need to garner consensus about morality.
- Because there is persistent moral disagreement.
- Because there are no moral facts at all.
- Because the moral realist has lost.

## Answer

Because there is persistent moral disagreement.

## Explanation

The passage explicitly identifies the lack of consensus as the primary reason for questioning the existence of objective moral facts.

What to watch: The passage asks why there is "so much disagreement" and then says "persistent moral disagreement presents us with a choice." That is the reason. "There are no moral facts at all" is tempting, but the author marks it with "Perhaps" as only one possibility. Lack of consensus is what the author describes, not the reason the author gives.

## Hints

- Look at the first two sentences to see what problem the author is trying to explain.
- The author asks 'why' something happens; find the condition that triggers this 'why'.
