## Transcript

Three students are discussing how volunteering has helped them develop new skills. I can't believe how fast this term has gone. Most of my free time has been taken up by mentoring high school students through the university outreach program. It's been such a rewarding experience, especially helping them prepare for college applications. The challenging part is managing different personalities and questions, but I feel like it's really improving my communication and leadership skills. What about you? It's been great in many ways. I've been teaching basic computer skills to older adults, which is something I never thought I'd do. At first, it was a little intimidating because I didn't know how to explain things simply. But over time, I've become much better at breaking down complex ideas. It's also made me more patient and flexible, which I think are skills I'll carry into any career. That sounds fantastic. I've been volunteering with an environmental group. We focus on local cleanup drives and tree planting. It's physically demanding sometimes, especially during long outdoor shifts, but I've gained so much from it. It's improved my organizational skills because I often help plan events and coordinate with volunteers. Plus, I've learned a lot about sustainability and environmental issues. I love how we're all in completely different areas, yet learning such transferable skills. One thing I didn't expect from mentoring is how much it's improved my problem-solving ability. Each student has unique challenges, and I've had to think on my feet a lot. Exactly. With the community center work, I've noticed I'm more confident in adapting my teaching style depending on the learner's needs. It's made me realize how important interpersonal skills are in any profession. I can relate. In my case, we're often working in teams of volunteers from diverse backgrounds. It's taught me a lot about teamwork and communication. And when unexpected problems come up, like running out of supplies during a cleanup, I've had to develop quick decision-making skills. That's such a good point. I've also learned time management the hard way. Balancing volunteering, classes, and personal life isn't easy, but it's made me more disciplined. Same here. I think volunteering pushes us out of our comfort zone in the best way possible. It's not just about helping others. It's about growing personally and professionally. Absolutely. And it's inspiring to know our small efforts are making a difference. Even though it's tiring, I feel it's worth every moment. I agree. Next semester, I'm planning to continue mentoring, but I might also join a literacy program to broaden my experience. That sounds like a great idea. I'm hoping to expand my role at the Community Center too, maybe even help train new volunteers. Let's all try to keep it going. It's so motivating to hear how we're gaining practical skills and contributing to our communities at the same time.
