## Answer

Governments spend large sums exploring space, while the oceans of our own planet remain largely unmapped. In my opinion, ocean exploration is just as important as space exploration, and in some practical respects it is even more urgent. Both fields expand human knowledge, but the oceans have a more direct effect on daily life.

The main reason is that the oceans are closely connected to human survival. They regulate the climate, produce much of the oxygen we breathe and supply food for a large share of the world's population. Exploring them helps scientists understand problems such as rising sea levels, coral reef decline and overfishing. For example, research on deep ocean currents can improve weather forecasts and help coastal cities prepare for storms and flooding.

Furthermore, ocean exploration offers scientific and economic discoveries comparable to those from space. Deep-sea creatures living in extreme conditions have provided ideas for new medicines and industrial materials. At the same time, space exploration remains valuable, since satellites support communication, navigation and environmental monitoring. Interestingly, satellites are also used to observe the oceans, which shows that the two fields can support each other rather than compete. A balanced research budget would therefore benefit both areas.

In conclusion, I believe ocean exploration is at least as important as space exploration. The oceans affect the climate, food supply and health of everyone on Earth, and they still hold many undiscovered resources. For these reasons, governments should give ocean research the same attention and funding that space programs receive.
