Do you believe that human empathy is declining in the digital age?

## Answer

Many people worry that smartphones and social media are making people less caring toward one another. Although digital technology does create some risks, I do not believe that human empathy is declining overall. Instead, the digital age is changing the ways in which people express compassion, both online and offline.

It is true that online communication can weaken empathy in certain situations. When people interact through screens, they cannot see facial expressions or hear tone of voice, so they can easily forget that a real person is reading. This partly explains why cruel comments and online bullying are common on social media. For instance, a teenager who posts a photo may receive insulting remarks from strangers who would never speak to her that way in person.

However, technology also allows empathy to reach further than ever before. People can now learn about suffering in distant countries within minutes and respond quickly. After a natural disaster, for example, online fundraising campaigns often collect donations from ordinary people all around the world. Similarly, online support groups allow patients with rare illnesses or people facing grief to find others who understand their experience. These examples suggest that digital tools can strengthen compassion rather than destroy it.

In conclusion, I do not think empathy is declining in the digital age, although the way it is expressed has changed. Online anonymity can encourage unkind behavior, but technology also connects people with others in need on a global scale. The real challenge is to use digital tools in ways that encourage kindness.

## Explanation

A strong response effectively balances the argument by acknowledging the convenience of digital communication while critically analyzing the loss of non-verbal cues. It uses clear topic sentences to organize arguments about social isolation versus global connectivity.

## Hints

- Consider how digital interactions differ from face-to-face conversations regarding tone and body language.
- Think about whether online platforms foster deeper connections or merely superficial exchanges.
