University tuition fees are increasing. Some argue that higher education should be made free. To what extent do you agree?

## Answer

As university tuition fees continue to rise, many people argue that higher education should be free for all students. I agree with this view to a large extent, because free tuition benefits both individuals and society, although some conditions are needed to keep the system affordable.

The main argument is that free tuition gives talented students an equal chance regardless of family income. When fees are high, a capable young person from a low-income family may decide not to apply rather than take on large debts. For example, a gifted student whose parents work in low-paid jobs might accept a factory job instead of training as an engineer. Removing fees allows such students to develop their abilities, which is fairer and makes better use of national talent.

Free higher education also brings long-term public benefits. Graduates generally earn more, pay more tax and depend less on government support over their lifetimes. Every country needs doctors, teachers and scientists, so funding their training is an investment rather than a gift. The whole community benefits when these professionals are trained without regard to their parents' wealth. Nevertheless, because universities are expensive to run, governments could reasonably limit free places to strong applicants. They could also require graduates to work in the country for several years after completing their degrees.

In conclusion, I largely agree that higher education should be made free, as it promotes equal opportunity and strengthens the economy. However, sensible limits on admissions or service requirements would help ensure that the policy remains sustainable.

## Explanation

A strong response acknowledges the complexity of the issue by presenting a balanced view. It effectively weighs the benefits of increased social mobility against the economic challenges of public funding, providing a clear, well-supported stance.
