International travel is cheaper and more convenient than ever. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

## Answer

Over the past few decades, budget airlines, online booking sites and simpler visa rules have made international travel cheaper and more convenient than ever. Although this trend brings some genuine problems, I firmly believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

The most important benefit is that affordable travel spreads both income and understanding. When low-cost flights begin serving a small coastal town, local families can open guesthouses, restaurants and tour businesses that employ young people who might otherwise leave. At the same time, visitors who share meals and conversations with residents often return home with a more respectful view of another culture. Millions of such encounters each year help to weaken stereotypes and build friendlier relations between nations. Cheaper fares also allow migrant workers and students abroad to visit their families more often.

The disadvantages are real, but they can largely be managed. Frequent flying adds to carbon emissions, and crowds of tourists can damage fragile historic sites or push up rents for local residents. However, several popular cities now charge day-trip fees, limit cruise ship arrivals or restrict short-term rentals in their historic centers. Combined with steady improvements in aircraft efficiency, measures like these show that the harms of tourism call for better regulation rather than a return to expensive travel.

In conclusion, cheaper international travel does create environmental and social pressures that deserve serious attention. Nevertheless, the economic opportunities and cultural understanding it offers are greater and more lasting, so I believe its advantages clearly outweigh its disadvantages.

## Explanation

A successful response provides a balanced perspective, acknowledging both the economic benefits of tourism and the environmental or cultural drawbacks, ultimately reaching a clear, supported conclusion.

## Hints

- Start by listing two positive impacts and two negative impacts of modern tourism to help structure your argument.
- Ensure your introduction clearly states your position on whether the benefits outweigh the costs, and maintain this stance throughout the essay.
