In general, people are living longer now. What are the causes and problems it may bring?

## Answer

People in most countries are now living much longer than previous generations. In my view, this trend is mainly caused by medical progress and better living conditions. Although longer lives are a major achievement, they also bring problems for health systems, pension funds and families, which societies must plan for carefully.

The first major cause is the development of modern medicine. Vaccines, antibiotics and improved surgery have greatly reduced deaths from infections and injuries. Long-term conditions such as heart disease and diabetes can now be controlled for many years with regular treatment. In addition, improved living standards have made a significant difference. Clean water, better nutrition and safer working conditions mean that fewer people fall seriously ill in the first place. For example, a factory worker today usually has protective equipment and access to health checks that his grandparents never had.

However, longer life expectancy creates several problems. As the proportion of elderly people grows, governments must spend more on pensions and health care, while fewer working-age people pay taxes to fund these services. This places heavy pressure on public budgets. Families are also affected, because adult children often have to care for elderly parents while raising their own children and working full time. A woman in her fifties, for instance, may reduce her working hours to look after a parent with dementia, which affects both her income and her well-being.

In conclusion, people are living longer mainly because of medical advances and better living conditions. This trend, however, puts financial pressure on governments and caring responsibilities on families. Societies should prepare by encouraging healthier aging and reforming pension systems.

## Explanation

A high-scoring response must explicitly address both components of the prompt: the causes of increased longevity and the problems it creates. Balanced coverage ensures the reader understands the full scope of the argument.

## Hints

- Start by brainstorming two primary reasons for longer lives, such as medical advancements and improved nutrition.
- Consider the economic and social impact, such as pension strain or healthcare demands, to address the second part of the prompt.
