Some young children spend a great amount of their time practicing sports. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this.

## Answer

In many countries, some children devote several hours every day to training in a single sport, often hoping to become professional athletes. In my view, this commitment brings valuable benefits, but it is worthwhile only when it is carefully balanced with rest, schoolwork and ordinary childhood activities.

The advantages are considerable. Regular, demanding practice builds physical fitness, coordination and healthy habits that can last a lifetime. It also develops character, because young athletes learn to accept defeat, follow a coach's advice and keep working toward distant goals. A child who trains in the swimming pool before school each morning, for instance, often becomes unusually disciplined and organized. These qualities later prove useful in exams, at university and in the workplace.

On the other hand, intensive training has serious disadvantages. Young bodies are still developing, so repeating the same movements for hours can cause lasting injuries to joints and bones. Heavy schedules may also leave little time for homework, friendships or other interests. A teenage gymnast who trains most evenings and weekends might reach a high level of skill. Yet if an injury ends her career, she may find that her education and social life have been neglected.

In conclusion, spending a great deal of time on sport can make children fitter, more disciplined and more resilient, but it also carries risks of injury and an unbalanced life. I believe the practice is beneficial only when parents and coaches limit training hours and protect time for school and rest.

## Explanation

A high-scoring response must explicitly address both the positive outcomes, such as physical health and discipline, and the negative consequences, such as academic pressure or burnout. Balanced coverage of both sides is essential for a complete argument.

## Hints

- Ensure you have at least one paragraph dedicated to the benefits and one to the drawbacks.
- Consider how excessive training might affect a child's social life or school performance.
