Young people are leaving their homes from rural areas to study or work in the cities. What are the reasons? Do advantages of this development outweigh its disadvantages.

## Answer

In many countries, large numbers of young people are leaving rural areas to study or work in cities. This movement is driven mainly by better educational and employment opportunities, and I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

The main reasons for this trend are economic and educational. Rural areas often offer limited jobs, many of which involve low-paid farming or seasonal work. Cities, in contrast, contain universities, training colleges and a wide range of industries. For example, a young woman from a farming village who wants to become a nurse may have no choice but to move to a city with hospitals and nursing schools. City life also attracts young people with its entertainment, transport links and sense of independence.

This development brings clear benefits, although it also has costs. Young migrants usually earn higher incomes, gain qualifications and send money home, which can support their families and improve village housing. On the other hand, rural communities may lose workers and become dominated by older residents, while cities can face overcrowding and rising rents. Yet these problems can be eased through investment in rural services and affordable urban housing. By contrast, the personal and economic gains of migration are difficult to achieve in any other way.

In conclusion, young people move to cities mainly to find better education and jobs. Although this trend creates challenges for both villages and cities, I believe its advantages for individuals, families and national economies outweigh its disadvantages.

## Explanation

A high-scoring response must explicitly identify the drivers of migration, such as educational opportunities and career prospects, while providing a balanced evaluation of whether the benefits to the individual and economy outweigh the potential decline of rural communities.

## Hints

- Ensure you dedicate at least one paragraph to the reasons for migration and another to the evaluation of its impact.
- Consider both the economic growth in cities and the potential loss of labor or cultural heritage in rural areas to provide a comprehensive view.
