What is your opinion on the impact of social media on youth mental health? Do you believe it is more harmful or beneficial?

## Answer

Social media has become a central part of young people's lives, shaping how they communicate, relax and see themselves. Although it offers some genuine benefits, I believe that its overall impact on youth mental health is more harmful than beneficial.

The main reason is that social media encourages constant comparison. Young users see carefully edited images of peers and celebrities who appear more attractive, popular or successful than they really are. For example, a teenage girl who scrolls through filtered vacation photos every evening may begin to feel that her own appearance and life are inadequate. Over time, such comparisons can contribute to anxiety and low self-esteem, especially when users measure their worth by the number of likes they receive.

Social media also damages well-being by disrupting sleep and exposing young people to online abuse. Many teenagers keep their phones beside the bed and continue messaging late into the night, leaving them tired and irritable at school. In addition, cyberbullying can follow a victim home in a way that playground bullying never could. It is true that online communities can support isolated young people, such as those with rare illnesses. However, these benefits rarely outweigh the daily pressures that most users face.

In conclusion, social media can provide connection and support, yet its effects on comparison, sleep and safety are more serious. I therefore believe it is more harmful than beneficial to youth mental health, and parents and platforms should do more to limit its risks.

## Explanation
