> You have 20 minutes to plan, write and check an essay on the topic below. Write 200-300 words and answer the question exactly as it is asked.

Some people claim that competition improves the quality of our private and professional lives. Others believe that being hyper-competitive is bad for individuals and society in general. What is your opinion?

## Answer

Some people believe that competition improves both our private and professional lives, while others argue that being hyper-competitive damages individuals and society. In my opinion, healthy competition is beneficial, but excessive competitiveness does more harm than good.

Moderate competition clearly encourages people to improve. In business, rivalry between companies pushes them to produce better products at lower prices, which benefits consumers. On a personal level, joining a local running club with friendly races can motivate someone to train regularly and set new goals. Similarly, an employee who admires a colleague's excellent presentations may work harder on her own public speaking, and both of them become more capable as a result. In each case, the presence of a rival provides a clear standard to aim for.

However, when competition becomes extreme, it begins to harm well-being and cooperation. Hyper-competitive people may see every colleague as a threat, refusing to share information or celebrate the success of others. In some schools, students under intense pressure to rank first suffer from stress and burnout, and a few even turn to cheating. At the level of society, a culture that values only winning can weaken trust and leave those who fall behind feeling worthless. Such outcomes suggest that the costs of extreme rivalry can easily exceed its rewards.

In conclusion, I believe competition improves our lives only when it remains balanced. Healthy rivalry can raise standards and motivate personal growth, but hyper-competitiveness damages mental health, relationships and social trust, so it should be discouraged.
