> You have 20 minutes to plan, write and check an essay on the topic below. Write 200-300 words and answer the question exactly as it is asked.

What are the advantages and the disadvantages of being over-competitive to individuals and society?

## Answer

Competition is often seen as a driving force behind progress, but some people become excessively competitive. In my view, being over-competitive offers certain advantages to individuals and society, yet its disadvantages are more serious. Healthy competition is useful, but extreme rivalry usually does more harm than good.

On the positive side, a strong competitive spirit can push individuals to achieve high standards. People who are determined to win often work harder, practice longer and develop their skills more quickly than others. For example, a young swimmer who is desperate to beat her rivals may train every morning and eventually reach national level. Society can also benefit, because competitive businesses and researchers constantly try to outperform each other, which can lead to better products, lower prices and new inventions.

On the other hand, excessive competitiveness can damage both personal well-being and social relationships. Individuals who always need to be the best may suffer from stress, anxiety and burnout, and they may see every failure as a disaster. A student who compares every grade with classmates, for instance, may lose friends and stop enjoying learning altogether. At the level of society, extreme rivalry can encourage dishonesty, such as cheating in exams or cutting corners in business to beat competitors. It can also reduce cooperation, which is essential for solving shared problems in workplaces and communities.

In conclusion, being over-competitive can motivate individuals and drive innovation in society. However, it also causes stress, damages relationships and encourages unethical behavior. I therefore believe its disadvantages outweigh its advantages, and people should aim for healthy rather than extreme competition.

## Explanation

A high-scoring response must explicitly balance the positive outcomes, such as increased productivity and innovation, against the negative repercussions, including stress and social fragmentation. Providing a clear structure that addresses both sides for both individuals and society ensures all task requirements are met.
