Universities should give the same amount of money to their students' sports activities as they give to their university libraries. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?

## Answer

Some people believe that universities should spend as much money on students' sports activities as they do on their libraries. I disagree with this statement. While sports are valuable for students' health and social lives, libraries are more central to a university's academic mission and should therefore receive greater funding.

The main reason is that libraries directly support the core purpose of higher education, which is learning and research. Students in every field rely on books, academic journals, databases and quiet study spaces to complete assignments and prepare for exams. These resources are expensive, as subscriptions to online journals and new technology cost a great deal every year. For example, a history student writing a final-year thesis may need access to specialized archives that only a well-funded library can provide. Without adequate funding, the quality of teaching and research would suffer.

That said, sports activities still deserve meaningful support. Exercise helps students manage stress, stay healthy and build friendships, all of which contribute to academic success. However, sports facilities usually benefit only those students who choose to take part, whereas the library serves almost the entire student body. Moreover, many sporting activities can be organized at relatively low cost through student clubs. A university football club, for instance, needs a field and basic equipment rather than continual investment in new materials.

In conclusion, I disagree that universities should fund sports and libraries equally. Sports play a useful role in student life, but libraries are essential to every student's education. Universities should therefore give libraries priority while still providing reasonable funding for sports.

## Explanation

A strong response acknowledges the complexity of the issue by presenting a clear thesis, followed by body paragraphs that each focus on a single, well-supported argument regarding either academic or athletic priorities.

## Hints

- Start by deciding your stance and listing two main reasons to support it.
